Description
A brief history of the GLAS brand: GLAS, a Bavarian manufacturer of agricultural equipment, began producing cars in 1955, contributing to the re-motorisation of post-war Germany. It all began with the Goggomobil, the famous microcar produced in 280, 000 units. The Isar, a slightly larger family car, followed. The first 4-cylinder engine was developed, with toothed belt timing - a world first! It was available in a range of displacements from 1000 to 1700 cm³ and was used in the "04" models, including the 1304 TS, which won a number of sporting victories, followed by the beautiful GT coupés and cabriolets and the 1700 saloon.
From 1963 onwards, GLAS entrusted Pietro FRUA, one of the great Italian coachbuilders of the time, with the production of new models, including the 1700 saloon, the GT coupés and cabriolets, which are among his masterpieces, and the V8 coupé, which bears an unmistakable resemblance to the beautiful Maseratis of the time, also designed by FRUA. In financial difficulties, GLAS was taken over in 1967 by its Bavarian neighbour BMW, and its Dingolfing production plant became the largest of its kind. The GLAS 2600 V8: This 4-seater grand touring coupé with an Italian body and German engine was presented in 1965 and produced from 1966 onwards. Only 277 examples were built, and this one was sold new to the Caluire dealership (69) and had 4 owners, all French. It is the only car ever driven in France, and is therefore an absolute rarity! It is powered by a V8 engine developed from the company's 4-cylinder engine. It has 2 timing belts and is fitted with 3 Solex carburettors operating in register. It is spacious, very comfortable and has a magnificent, well-instrumented dashboard. This vehicle has always been maintained and has never been fully restored or converted. It is in good general condition and its low mileage appears to be original. Here is a non-exhaustive list of the main work carried out: - complete overhaul of the engine - replacement of the gearbox and overhaul of the axle - overhaul of the running gear and brakes - replacement of the tyres and shock absorbers - fitting of an all-stainless steel exhaust system to enhance the sound of the V8 - partial overhaul of the seats and carpeting - new battery - new fuel pump, etc. Other photos can be supplied on request. The maintenance of this vehicle is facilitated by membership of the Glas Automobilclub International, which is very active and has over 1000 members worldwide.
