Description
When the Mercedes 300SEL was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1968 it was the world’s fastest production saloon car. In keeping with the Mercedes brand, the 300SEL was not just built for speed but utmost comfort for the driver and their passengers. Air suspension, power windows, central locking, power steering, and ventilated 4-wheel power disc brakes were among the standard features for the luxury saloon, our SEL was also equipped with a very rare option of BEHR air conditioning. The car had been subject to a repaint in its factory colours of Tobacco Brown, which complements the Gognac interior very well.
WWU 903J left the factory among the last 1000 examples of the 300SEL in 1971 before heading to America. The car was reportedly first owned by John Whitney Sr, a well-known Hollywood, CA computer graphics engineer and animator who worked with Alfred Hitchcocks. The latest owner over the pond was an associate of the 'Peterson Automotive Museum' in Los Angeles, CA. Late in 2020, the Mercedes was purchased by a regular customer of ours from America and imported to the UK.
In the heart of the Mercedes sits a very powerful 6. 3-litre M100 V8 from the luxurious 600 limousine model. This extraordinary engine propels the 300SEL to 60mph in just 6. 5 seconds and boasts top speeds of over 140mph. The M100 engine is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission providing sensationally smooth gear changes. The buttery smoothness extends throughout the self levelling suspension. With the recent works to the braking system, suspension, and new engine mounts, the Mercedes boasts a superb drive and passed an MOT with no advisories. Since 2021 the Mercedes Benz has been in indoor storage as part of an impressive 40 car collection. As a result, the Mercedes will be freshly serviced and prepared for its new owner.
