Volkswagen produced over 20 million Beetles. But at the end of the 1960s the “wind of change” was blowing in the Volkswagen factory. The new era was ushered in with a water-cooled, transverse in-line engine with front-wheel drive. Similar to Maserati, “winds” were the namesake. The new models were originally supposed to be called Scirocco, Passat and Blizzard. Blizzard was quickly overturned because a ski company had the name protected and so Blizzard became the "Golf" model. The star designer and Italdesign boss Giorgio Guigario was commissioned to design the Scirocco, among other things. He drew a coupe design in an exciting wedge shape. In March 1973, the Karmann Ghia successor was presented at the Geneva Motor Show. The initial engine was a 1. 1 liter with 50 HP and a 1. 5 liter with 70 or 85 HP. The hot desert wind Scirocco was just a mild breeze for the tuner Oettinger. As early as 1975, an approximately 100 hp Oettinger engine with a mechanical Pierburg CL injection system was ready. Although it never went into series production, it was further developed and later used with great success in racing. In 1976 a drilled out 1. 8 liter engine with 125 hp and K-Jetronic injection was already at the start. The “Sport Auto” magazine praised this version as the best four-cylinder in the world. But all of this was not enough for the Oettinger company. In a further step, the displacement was expanded to 2. 0 liters in 1980 ”. Inspired by the Cosworth engine from Formula 1, the first 1. 6 liter 16V engine from Oettinger was officially delivered in 1981 and achieved a very dynamic 136 hp. In 1985, the Oettinger basic design was installed by VW in the Scirocco II as a 1. 8 liter. At this point in time, Oettinger was already completing the 2. 0 liter engine with 170 hp. As a tuner, Oettinger has always had close ties with VW and has just celebrated considerable success in racing with the Scirocco. The basic version of the Scirocco I is characterized by its clear lines and, above all, its low weight of only 800 kg. The rear axle construction was an ingenious engineering achievement and shone through its simplicity and excellent driving characteristics. Auto Motor und Sport definitely described the Scirocco as one of the best lying cars available in 1974.

History of the VW Oettinger - Scirocco

Delivered in 1979 in Bornheim, this Scirocco immediately fell into the hands of the Belgian VW Motorsport boss at the instigation of the first owner and was converted into an Oettinger Scirocco in cooperation with Oettinger. In this Scirocco you can find all performance levels and improvements developed by Oettinger until the 1990s. Originally equipped as a 16V Oettinger with 136 hp, today the top engine from the noble tuner with 2. 0 liters and almost 200 hp is installed. A 5-speed racing gearbox, sliding block lock, factory chassis from Fichtl & Sachs, internally ventilated disc brakes make the heart of every motorsport enthusiast beat faster. This Scirocco is simply a rocket and is unlikely to find a comparable contemporary opponent on today's roads. The special thing about this vehicle is that from day 1, all conversions were documented. Every invoice is available. The first owner has invested an unbelievable amount in modifying his beloved desert wind. The original checkbook is available. With its original 47, 570 KM, this vehicle is mostly still in the original paint. Of course, all changes have also been wrote down. Technically and optically, the VW Scirocco is in a very neat condition. This car spent the whole of its life in the owner's family until it moved to an important collection in 2012, but here it was never registered. The car currently has the German registration papers.
We sell this unique Oettinger on behalf of our customers on commission.
