HIGHLIGHTS
- 1920’s race car
- Very rare
- Presents well with some patina
THE APPEAL
The Rugby was manufactured by Durant Motors Inc., from 1921 to 1931. The model typically was a four-door touring, although there were some Roadsters produced, but nothing quite like this unique machine you see here.
Based on the Rugby chassis, this unique Rugby Racer is thought to be a one-off creation designed for racing in the late 20s and 30s. The condition for the age of the car is superb, and it has a patina which fits the style of a 20s racer perfectly. There have been hydraulic brakes fitted which give more reassurance should you need them when powering the 3.7-litre straight-six through the gears.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- Unfortunately, no paperwork was present when the car was photographed
- Currently with Argentinian title and Belgian import document
THE INTERIOR
- Leather interior
- Original instruments
- Raw and ready
The interior of the Rugby Racer does have some patina on the red leather seats, but with that said, this is in keeping with the age and style of the car.
The wooden dashboard is in good condition; there are a couple of small splits, but it would be an easy item to replace if you wanted to, although it’s not necessary. The instruments do have some patina on the faces. The speedometer might not work as it shows 130 when stationary, and the oil pressure shows 60 lbs, so these may need attention. The other instruments do sit level, as you would expect. The steering wheel looks to be original and is wrapped in rope, offering extra grip and a wider feel.
The floor area is in good condition with no real signs of wear to point out. There is some light patina on the leather surrounding the body of the Rugby, but this isn’t damaged.
THE EXTERIOR
- Charming exterior patina
- Brooklands windows
- Large fuel tank
The body of the Rugby is finished with a blue/grey period-looking colour scheme. There are some signs of patina, but this is minimal and adds to the characteristics of the 20s racer.
Starting at the front, the radiator grille cover is in good condition and painted with its racing number of 51; the radiator surround is also in good condition and bears the Rugby emblem on the front. The bonnet is made from aluminium on the top, which is louvered, and aluminium louvred panels have been added to each side to aid cooling. This is all held in place with some leather straps that have weathered nicely. Further up, the shaped body follows the dashboard with an additional piece fitted to improve aerodynamics over the steering wheel and driver. The Brooklands windows are in good condition with no noticeable scratches.
At the rear is a large fuel tank with a fill point fitted to either side, and there are no dings or dents. This also has the car's racing number 51 painted on and some light patina in keeping with the rest of the car.
The wire wheels all look to be in good condition and fitted with a matching set of tyres that have good tread remaining, including the side-mounted spare wheel.
THE MECHANICS
- 3.7-litre straight-six
- 3-speed manual gearbox
- Hydraulic brakes
The 3.7-litre straight-six runs on an additional can with fuel. The car has twin carburettors which help give a healthy performance from the 1920s racer.
Fitted with a three-speed manual gearbox, the Rugby changes gear as you would expect. The brakes have been upgraded to hydraulic, which gives a pleasant experience when it comes to stopping the car.
The chassis sections appear to be in good order, with just a small amount of patina showing in places.
The vendor informs us that car needs attention and TLC before the car can be driven.
