This is a rare bird indeed. Completely matching numbers the current owner has owned the car for over 20 years. And the owner before him owned the car for 20 years prior to that.
While in the ownership of the prior owner the engine had a complete rebuild by Wayne Obry of Motion Products. The car also underwent a repaint from its original white to the current deep red and the interior was reupholstered. The body was not removed from the car making this an incredibly unmolested original example.
In the new and current ownership (purchased in the early 90’s) the owner had the original engine and transmission removed and placed on a stand for preservation. A correct newly rebuilt engine was installed with the intent to race the car. The owner quickly realized he was not a risk taker and the 328 was removed from racing duty with just over 3, 000 miles on the replacement engine. The car presents beautifully with the paint, interior and engine in pristine condition. Boxes of invoices, documentation and pictures accompany the car along with a slew of spares. Located in Boston MA.
Delivered to Motorwagen in Kassel, Germany on December 11, 1937.
Owned by Lieutenant General James M. Gavin of the 82n Airborne Division.
In researching the history of this car, I had the honor of contacting the previous owner who is now 85 years old. He remembered this 328 clearly. It shared garage space with a Ferrari 330 a 250 GT SWB and a 275 GTB/ 4. He confirmed that the car was original except for a repaint and reupholstered seats and that he had purchased the car directly from Germany along with a BMW 507 which he still owns and drives today.
According to this gentleman the BMW 328 was owned by Jumpin James M. Gavin a lieutenant general, who was the third Commanding General of the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II. while he was stationed in Europe.
In current ownership for over 20 years. Bought through Wayne Obry Motion Products.
The previous owner brought the car from Germany in 1975 and owned it until the current owner’s purchase.
Raced in SCCA and SVRA US before being retired for leisurely driving.
Original engine was put on pallets before being raced 20 years ago.
