1960 Mercedes-Benz 220SE Cabrio (W128)

***Vendor supplied images***

Highlights

  • 2.2L M127 6-cylinder powerplant with 4-speed manual transmission
  • One of only 1,112 cabriolets built
  • Luxurious interior with extensive walnut trim

The Appeal

Introduced in 1958, the W128 was the last of the Ponton range - a luxury car that followed directly from its predecessor with the addition of mechanical fuel injection. The new 220SE, as a result, boasted an extra 137bhp, without fiddling around with the car’s remarkably opulent cabin.
This example, built in 1960, is a beautifully finished, nicely restored example - that acts as a wonderful timewarp to arguably the golden age of the luxury car.

The History and Paperwork

  • Sadly we don’t know much regarding the history of this car
  • Built-in 1960 at Mercedes-Benz’ Sindelfingen factory, West Germany
  • One of only 1,112 built
  • Currently indicates 51,955 miles on a five-figure odometer
  • Sadly we can’t verify if this is the car’s true mileage
  • At a stage later in its life, the car underwent a restoration
  • Currently based in the Netherlands

The Interior

  • Impressive red leather interior
  • Extended walnut trim
  • Highly original dashboard with period trapezoid instruments
  • Instruments are all in good order, though we do note a crack to the radio’s casing
  • Gauges and dials are clean and well-presented with no reported faults
  • Chrome trims in good order with only light signs of patina
  • Impressive off-white steering wheel
  • Wooden trims are in good order throughout with a fabulous grain
  • Seats are free of rips and tears with a fine red leather
  • Boot is clean and well-kept with solid floors
The quality of this distinguished car’s restoration is clear to see the moment you cast an eye into the cabin. With only a crack in the radio’s casing to note, the main array is beautifully presented and nicely picked out in an exceptional walnut.
The upholstery, door cards and lining a presented in an excellent red leather, which gives a sumptuous and distinctly plush feel to every surface. It appears free of rips and tears, with only soft creasing to the bolsters.
Round the back, the book is in excellent order with solid-looking floors.

The Exterior

  • Impressive ‘Ponton’ bodywork designed by Fritz Nallinger
  • Contrast black fabric soft top
  • Bodywork is in solid condition with no unseemly gaps
  • No dents or dings that we’ve been able to discern
  • Paintwork is in good condition with only light signs of use
  • Chromework is nicely-kept and contrasts well with soft patina
  • Glasswork and lenses in good condition
  • Colour-matched wheels present well
  • Shod in a full set of Maxxis tyres
  • Good, solid underside with only gentle signs of use
Clearly having been restored to a high standard, this Ponton Merc’ is a real looker. Its smooth, rounded curves and attractive chrome all come together to make a very distinctive mid-century car.
The off-white paintwork suits this one perfectly, sat on colour-matched wheels and topped off with a contrasting black soft top, it’s all in very good order with only the slightest signs of use. It’s clear that its restoration was a comprehensive one.
With a good, solid chassis and a perfectly-presented soft-top, we’ve no doubt it’s a superb example, guaranteed to get plenty of admiring glances.

The Mechanics

  • 2.2L M127 6-cylinder powerplant
  • 4-speed manual transmission
  • Very nicely presented engine bay that shows no concerns
  • We understand this car has not been used in the last few years, so vendor advises to do some technical maintenance, The car is in a driving condition but needs some tlc.
Popping open this Ponton’s bonnet reveals the M127, a very well-regarded powerplant that’s still got plenty of part availability.
The vendor informs us that it’s a very smooth drive - something befitting of its luxurious nature - and ready to return to the road.

Summary

With only a very low number built, this is a rare beast - and to our eyes is a simply fabulous example. It’s not often you’ll get a chance to get a W128 in your garage - and this example’s opulent colour scheme and excellent finish should be enough to convince any enthusiast to take on this impeccable opportunity.
