THE APPEAL

Launched in 1967, the Triumph TR5 is generally considered the most desirable of all TR models. Almost aesthetically identical to the beautiful TR4 designed by Giovanni Michelotti, it was equipped with a brand new inline-six engine with mechanical fuel injection, which represented a leap in quality both in terms of performance and technological refinement.
The Lucas Mk II mechanical injection system was simple but effective and transformed the TR into a fast and rewarding sports car.
The independent rear suspension also gave it great agility and excellent road holding. Despite its many merits, the TR5 remained in production for just over a year, giving way to the new TR6 in 1969. This not only makes it very rare, but also the fastest TR ever, thanks to its lighter weight compared to later models.

Imported into Italy in the early eighties by its second owner, this TR5 is in good shape, having been rarely used and always lovingly maintained after an in-depth restoration in the nineties which covered every aspect of the mechanics, bodywork and interior.
Equipped with the useful and desirable overdrive gearbox, this TR5 is a nice example of the most powerful of the TRs, a sports car of rare charm and very fun to drive.
The famous in-line six-cylinder, powerful and rich in torque, manifests itself with its characteristic pleasantly rough sound when started and at low speeds, but every pressure on the fast pedal elicits ferocious howls. Acceleration is extremely lively, with abundant torque at all revs.
The overdrive gearbox of the TR5 gives it a double personality: simply engage the overdrive to quickly drop the revs, obtaining a more relaxed drive, ideal for trips and relaxing open-air rides in the countryside.

This TR5 was completely restored in the early nineties. The high-level restoration was commissioned by its second and current owner and carried out by well-known specialists.
The interior of this Triumph is in good condition, with comfortable reupholstered seats in perforated black vinyl with white piping and flawless door panels.
The wooden dash houses a 130 mph speedometer, a tachometer and central gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level and amperage, all functional and in good condition.
The upper part of the dashboard has no fading or scratches, as does the nice vinyl lining on the center console.
The upper part of the doors features shiny wood finishes, which add a touch of exclusivity.
The black soft top with colour coordinated cover is efficient and in good condition and the useful and interesting original tonneau cover is also present.
On the three-spoke steering wheel with wooden rim, the enamel horn button is slightly faded.
All surfaces are free from scratches or discolouration, with shiny brightwork and good plastics.
This roadster is still capable of respectable performance today, thanks to the brilliant six-cylinder engine with a pleasantly raucous sound coupled to the desirable four-speed gearbox with overdrive.
The guttural melody at low revs becomes increasingly sharp as the speed increases and, together with the great charm of the very sporty and suggestive cockpit and the sight of the sculpted bonnet, offers great emotions.

THE EXTERIOR

  • In good overall condition
  • High-quality older restoration
  • Soft top and soft top cover in good condition
  • Tonneau cover
  • Original knock-off wire wheels
  • Solid underbody
The great charm of the bodywork designed by Giovanni Michelotti for the TR4, extremely appreciated  for its great aesthetic cleanliness combined with skilful characterizations that make it unmistakable, such as the small eyelids on the front headlights, the sides with a solid and muscular appearance, the dynamic line of the rear wheel arches and the hint of fins at the back, led to it being reutilized almost unchanged on the TR5.
Restored in the early nineties and maintained with great care since then, the bodywork of this car is in quite good condition, resplendent in its correct white paint, enriched by brightwork, headlights, lettering, badges and windows in very good condition.
The TR5 is characterized by refined style details such as the chrome-plated frame around the front turn signals which extends into a molding that marks the belt line up to the passenger compartment, the windshield with an external metal frame in bodywork colour, the large front grille with a simple design and the chrome-plated frames of the rear lights.
Exterior details include a black soft top with colour-coordinated soft top cover, the useful tonneau cover and beautiful original knock-off wire wheels.
The underbody is in good condition, with no signs of rust or leaks and has been recently examined and cleaned.

  • 2,498 cc six-cylinder in-line engine with 150 HP
  • Mechanical fuel injection
  • Four-speed gearbox with overdrive
  • Front disc brakes
  • Independent suspension

Smoothness is one of the most appreciated characteristics of the TR5, thanks to the elastic six-cylinder engine, rich in torque at all speeds, here aided by the excellent four-speed gearbox with optional overdrive.

In this TR5, the mechanics were completely restored in the nineties and carefully maintained and overhauled when necessary over the following years by the second owner, who kept it with him for forty years and has always entrusted it to expert mechanics of the brand.
The engine compartment is in excellent condition, clean and tidy, without leaks or oxidation.
The mechanics of this car, rarely driven but always kept in working order and preserved with great love and care by the seller, have been constantly fine-tuned and never neglected over the years.
The beautiful original knock-off wire wheels were fitted with new tires before the sale.
