Lot 376
1963 AJS 646cc Model 31 CSR Hurricane
Registration no. 418 BJW
Frame no. A83890
Engine no. 31 CSR X8636
The 1963 AJS 646cc Model 31 CSR Hurricane is a rare and desirable motorcycle with an interesting history. A high-performance variant of the AJS Model 31, the CSR (Competition Spring Frame Road) was produced by Associated Motor Cycles (AMC) to rival Triumph and BSA's twin-cylinder machines. Equipped with a 646cc parallel-twin engine, the Model 31 CSR had won the Thruxton 500 race outright in 1960, and in 1962 was named Hurricane. It was known for its blend of power and handling, making it a favourite among enthusiasts of the era. This particular example was purchased new by the vendor from Kings of Wolverhampton and registered on 29th March 1963. Used regularly but sparingly over the years, the bike has more recently been showcased at events such as the Stafford Show. With a mileage from new of 30, 732, which the private vendor confirms is correct, it is a well-preserved classic. Some upgrades have been carried out, including the conversion of the electrical system from 6 volts to 12 volts and the addition of twin carburettors. However, the vendor confirms that, aside from these modifications, the bike remains in its original specification. Whilst it was briefly run in preparation for sale, its recent period of inactivity means it will require recommissioning before taking to the road with a new owner. Documentation accompanying the bike includes the old buff RF60 logbook, the current V5C registration document, and an AJS/ Matchless Owner's Club certificate, further attesting to its provenance. This is a fine example of a sought-after British classic motorcycle. Key not required
All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams Motorcycles website for all pertinent auction information.
