Lot 328
The Barry Winter Collection
1960 AJS 498cc Model 20
Registration no. 377 AAD
Frame no. A70636
Engine no. 55/ G9 27303 (See text)
This AJS Model 20 was purchased in 2008 from close friend Terry Honour, with 34, 962 miles recorded on the odometer. Barry has covered approximately 14, 000 miles during his ownership, describing the machine as a 'fantastic ride'. Since acquisition the rear wheel has been rebuilt with stainless spokes and chrome rims, and in 2011 Barry undertook an engine top-end rebuild, including a rebore and replacing the valves. It is worthwhile noting that the machine is fitted with 1955 Matchless G9 crankcases. A list of all maintenance carried out and new parts fitted is on file.
Barry has used the AJS on a lot of club runs and for trips abroad, including the Auvergne Rally in Central France (July 2013) and the Los Juacos Rally near Madrid, Spain covering around 400 miles (May 2015). In September 2018 the AJS was taken to the Auvergne again as a spare but not used. Since then the machine has seen some limited use on club runs but otherwise has been kept in garage storage.
In October 2017 (at 33, 360 miles) the AJS was checked over for road test in The Classic MotorCycle magazine's July 2018 edition by Steve Wilson, who gave it a good report! '377 AAD' also featured on the front cover. Accompanying paperwork includes some expired MoTs; DVLA correspondence; sundry invoices; reproduction instruction manuals and spare parts lists; and old/ current V5/ V5C documents. Key not required. See running video online.
All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams Motorcycles website for all pertinent auction information.
