Description
One of the most defining aspects of the 1973 De Tomaso Pantera L was its fusion of European styling and American performance. Designed by the legendary Italian firm Ghia, under the guidance of Tom Tjaarda, the Pantera L featured sleek, aggressive lines, a wedge-shaped body, and a distinctive low-slung profile. This design language was ahead of its time, setting a precedent for many mid-engine supercars that followed.
Underneath this exotic exterior, however, lay the heart of an American beast, the Ford 351 Cleveland V8 engine. This combination of Italian aesthetics and American muscle created a sports car that was both beautiful and reliable, offering easier maintenance and accessibility compared to European rivals like Ferrari and Lamborghini.
The mid-engine layout of the Pantera L was a key innovation in sports car design. While the concept was not entirely new, having been popularized by cars like the Lamborghini Miura, the Pantera brought it to a wider audience, especially in the American market.
Our Red Pantera offered here is the "Lusso" version, introduced in 1973 & included several refinements that improved both aerodynamics and safety.
The last owner brought the car in from US 2019 and has much enjoyed his time in the drivers seat.... as a long-term bike racer at heart, it was a seismic change from two wheels but certainly a scratch that needed itching and I know its lead to a further 4 wheeled purchase, hence being now offered for sale.
It's in remarkable overall condition, especially as you realise it's now over 50 years old. Paint and body are in fine fettle and certainly the engine and running gear equally so as its been subject to extensive mechanical works by renowned Pantera Specialists, Three Point Four. Importantly there are detailed invoices which collectively yield over £40, 000 of recent works.
For me the extremely rare & original 15″ Campagnolo Magnesium wheels look quite magnificent and a wonderful addition for the car which cost an absolute fortune & took the owner ages to source. Subsequently fully refurbished and fitted with correct Pirelli Cinturato P7 on the front and 10″ wide Avon CR6-ZZ on the rear!
Along with the wheels the brakes and suspension were also overhauled during the Pantera’s recommissioning, which has left the car with the necessary stopping and handling capabilities to match the mighty 5. 8L V8.
Presented in its original factory colour and specification this example is upholstered in a black vinyl, spanning the dashboard and doors. The redesigned seats of the Lusso give a low slung driving position. One of the most striking elements of the interior is the centre console, angled toward the drive, which houses switches and controls plus the famously vertically mounted radio!
Benefitting from the mid-engine layout there is plenty storage space at the front and great deal more space behind the engine to accommodate luggage.
Unlike many other examples of Pantera that have been modified, this is a highly original example being completely faithful to its factory specification, which is confirmed by both the 'Marti' and De Tomaso Driver Club reports which are present in the history file.
It would be a pleasure to answer any questions you might have. However, to really appreciate this fabulous De Tomaso, it needs to be seen “in the flesh”, so do please call me directly on +44(0)the details below to arrange a viewing.
