CITROEN CX GTi FOR SALE - enthusiast owned

"European Car of the year 1975"...

1985 2500cc Manual Australian Spec. £8950. 00 - please click on the above link to my website

The car was sold from the Slough factory as the Southern Hemisphere would not buy French cars after they blew up Rainbow Warrior in New Zealand in 1985.

It was not registered here till 1988. The interior is all leather, electric sun roof, five speed manual and high ratio axle and RHD. Round instruments, automatic locking, radio, Citroen suspension with power brakes and steering and electric windows. We believe it was used by a family au pair and sold through a London garage to four Citroen enthusiasts before it was purchased in 2004 with 83450 miles on the clock.

It is recording today 118065 miles with an MoT to Feb 2025. All service records have been retained. The air-con has just been re-gassed and the car is working as it should.

The car is very original and has been carefully looked after and not been rebuilt with no obvious rust. It was repainted about 30 years ago.

Only 8 examples of the CX GTi are thought to be on the road today...

Citroen CX GTi background

European Car of the year 1975

The CX made its debut in August 1974, its name derived from the French for drag coefficient – this latest Citroen flagship being the world’s most aerodynamically efficient saloon.

By 1976, the CX was available with the C-Matic semi-automatic gearbox with the 2. 4 litre engine, and in May 1977 the GTi was introduced for drivers with visions of being the next Diddier Pironi. In place of the standard twin-choke Weber carburettor the GTi’s 2. 4 litre four came with Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection, supplying 128bhp and 145lbs ft of torque.

Sales in the UK started in September 1977 and represented “A synthesis of all the qualities you could want and need in a car today” as in Citroen’s PR.

If that was not enough, the owner could revel in the alloy wheels, front fog lights, and five speed gearbox.

Indeed, The Autocar endorsed the GTi perfectly by quoting the the GTi was ‘Perfectly capable of being cruised all day flat-out, carrying its passengers in near-perfect comfort’.

If it is difficult to imagine that the final CX left the factory in 1991, it is amazing to think that the first model entered production 50 years ago. The CX was Citroen’s very last entirely in-house creation, and still looking very much up to date today, designed then by Robert Opron.

The CX came with front wheel drive, a transverse engine - a first for Citroen, and self levelling suspension, plus a cyclops eye speedometer

The Motor magazine described the CX as :-

‘One of the world’s most beautiful production cars of all time’

A CAR magazine test the following year stated that the Citroen was ‘One of the few cars that belongs to the future as much it does to 1975’
