Description

For sale, through JOHN BROWN 4X4 LTD, Land Rover® 90 Ragtop in Drab Olive (1986).

Diesel 2495cc. MOT until 8th October 2025. Ex-Military with late release from forces in 2011. 2 previous keepers since. 111, 000 miles. Recent Canvas. Six Seater – rear bench seats. NATO Hitch. Bonnet Mounted Spare. 750 tyres. Un-welded Chassis. Military Roll Bar. Original Screw Lenses. Aluminium Door Tops.

Here we have for sale the popular ex-military 90, having been subject to a very late release from forces in 2011. Having had just two keepers since release, it is perhaps not surprising then, that the chassis on this vehicle has never been repaired – most unusual for a near 40 year old Land Rover®, but made possible due to the long military service where these vehicles were often dry stored and not heavily used on salty roads in the winter. To preserve the un-welded chassis for future years, we have cleaned, prepared and undersealed the underside (including axles). This should keep the chassis in good order for many years to come.

Externally, it sports a host of original military specification items that one would hope to see on an original vehicle… military screw lenses for easy bulb changes, NATO hitch, rear bumperettes, bonnet mounted spare, etc. A new military canvas has been fitted for future waterproofing and the whole vehicle is presented in the original Drab Olive colour scheme – we think it looks just right. As a military vehicle, it enjoys aluminium door tops (which prevents them from flapping and rusting) and a military roll cage is fitted in the event of a roll over accident.

Internally, one can see a range of features which hark back to the vehicles military days… a central convoy switch controls lighting and there are interesting features like gun clips, etc etc. There is seating for six people including the driver thanks to the fitment of rear bench seats, which makes it ideal as a family run-about for both winter and summer use. Obviously, there is a heater fitted too which includes front de-mist – so it really can be used in all weathers and all year round, just as they did in the military.

Out on the road, the dependable 2500cc diesel engine conveys this truck along just as it should. Whilst it is not going to break any land speed records, this unit was chosen and favoured by the military for being dependable and reliable. It is a very basic unit which should give good service. This 90 benefits from a long MOT which runs to October 2025. The odometer on this vehicle reads in KM’s (with MPH on the insert), which is common for military use – it is currently reading 180, 000KM which is not excessive for a vehicle which is 38 years old. This equates to less than 3000 miles per annum since new. The engine starts very keenly and ticks over sweetly and this should continue to be the case for many many more miles.

Interestingly, within a short space of time, this ‘modern’ coil sprung 90 Land Rover® will become both tax and MOT exempt. This will make it even more desirable and promises to reduce running costs significantly year on year. This is especially attractive when one considers that this truck has disc brakes, coil springs, 5 speed all synchro gearbox, etc etc. It is effectively a modern car running with classic benefits… being able to own a vehicle which does not require an MOT makes life so much easier in terms of owning the car – we still, of course recommend that vehicles are maintained and serviced regularly, but this can be done on your own timetable and within your own parameters, rather than those of an over zealous garage looking to create large bills for works carried out.

In summary, if you are looking for a family Land Rover® that will go anywhere at any time, then this could be for you. Whether that be with canvas off to the beach in the summer, or up a snow-clad mountain in the winter – this vehicle can do it…. and with all the benefits mentioned above, it is a bit of a no brainer!
