Description
The origins of today’s road-going Jeeps can be traced back to WWII. American GIs needed a rough-and-tumble vehicle to get them safely through troubling terrain. But as production demand diminished towards the war's end, Willys sought to repurpose their rugged utilitarian vehicle as part of a project known simply as “CJ” or Civilian Jeeps.
Civilian Jeeps would go on to find purpose outside of traditional agricultural scenarios, not dissimilar to Land Rovers they found their way into the heats and minds of Americans. No doubt, their sales success was helped by a careful product placement with Daisy Duke.
This, however, is a later model. A third generation or “JK” Wrangler. Supplied new in 2015, it is the culmination of decades of heritage and off-road capability. It’s no ordinary Wrangler though, it’s a Rubicon. Named after the Rubicon Trail, it is the peak of off-road capable Wranglers.
Externally, this car is uniquely finished in “Tank Green”. It’s a rare colour that was only made available for just a few months, which means this is believed to be 1 of just 5 examples in the UK. The car has been subjected to a host of overlanding upgrades.
At the front, is a heavy-duty front bumper that is fitted with a Zeon 8 winch, and there is a Rigid Radiance LED light bar and pod light set up. Along the flanks, Poison Spyder-supplied rocker plates are fitted to protect the sill panel during any off-road activity and at the rear a Go Industries bumper.
The suspension and wheels are not standard either, firstly there is a 3. 5” JKS lift kit, raising the whole car to increase ground clearance and maximise its off-road ability. To make the most of that, a set of Method Race wheels wrapped in 37” tall Cooper SST tyres. To cover the new much wider and taller wheels are a set of Poison Spyder Arch Flares. As the top of the top-of-the-line Rubicon, the car benefits from factory-fitted Dana 44 axles. The rear of which has been upgraded with Chromoly-half shafts to near bulletproof the axle assembly. Finally, the exterior is topped off by a Maximus Roof Rack assembly that includes a tent box, perfect for an overlanding getaway.
These upgrades take this already capable off-roader to new levels, no area is to be left un-explored in a car like this. And this work isn’t cheap! Over £14, 000 was spent to take this Rubicon from a trailblazer to a trail-crusher.
If it wasn’t abundantly clear about just how tough this car is, the interior firmly reinforces it. The first thing you’ll notice are the Rough Country grab handles to help heave yourself into it - on your way up you’ll notice the interior roof lining is finished in black, unlike the more common white. Black cloth seats with Rubicon embroidery and contrasting white stitching allows seating for five.
Up on the b-pillar you’ll notice an assortment of ancillary switches, as well as on the dash by your right knee the controls to lock the differentials and disconnect the sway bar for maximum axle articulation. The window switches are mounted right in the centre of the dash between the airvents, making the removal of the doors easier should you want to. There is also a hardwired in dash cam, air-conditioning and a radio with Aux and phone capabilities.
Under the bonnet, you’ll find a 3. 6-litre Pentastar V6. It produces around 285bhp, but more importantly 260 lb-ft of torque. Plenty for you to use at a lower RPM whilst traversing rocky terrain. The engine is mated to a 5-speed automatic, sourced from Mercedes-Benz. This combination means that despite the rugged nature of the car, you’re treated to silky-smooth gear changes and power delivery.
As with all cars, it’s regular maintenance is important. Over the past few years this Jeep hasn’t covered many miles, but despite that has remained MOT’d. The service records show:
