Description
The Gulia was Alfa Romeo’s 105 Series saloon that was created for both road use and competition. Designed by O. S. Puliga’s team of engineers, it featured a 1. 6lt 4-cylinder DOHC engine, a 5 speed gearbox and a sport suspension of superimposed front wishbones and trailing rear arms with shocks and springs on top. Its body was shaped under extensive research conducted by I. Colucci’s team at Turin’s Polytechnic wind tunnel facility to feature W. Kamm’ signature tail, curved greenhouse pillars, low mounted nose and airflow promoting sides. A year into production, the limited series Tipo 105. 16 was unveiled at Monza with power to weight revisions for competition. More specifically, its 1. 6 lt engine output was increased by 19% via fitting twin 45 DCOE Webers rendering 110 bhp at 6500 rpm. Its body weight was reduced by 9% to 910 kg via deletion of inner headlights, bumpers’ overriders, heavier safety glass, cabin heater, door armrests, glovebox lid, passenger grab handle and ashtray. Reaching a top speed of 185 km/ h required equal counteracting braking by discs all around. Produced strictly in Bianco Spino, all 501 copies were awarded with FIA and CSAI homologation for the European Touring Car Challenge. A year later, the road going series Tipo 105. 26 was unveiled that incorporated Tipo 105. 16 competition technology along with additional revisions including servo assisted dual circuit braking (1968) and sportier suspension geometry with rear antiroll bar (1970). In 1974 Tipo 105. 26 was restyled losing its trademark center spine on the bonnet, the center groove on the boot and aggressive radiator grill to give way to Nuova Super series that lasted till the end of production in 1977.
The Tipo 105. 26 offered was produced towards the very end of the series in June of 1974 in most captivating and dusk-contrasting bluish shade of gray Grigio Indaco over Amarando interior. In 2023 the car underwent an extensive restoration that entailed a bare metal respray in its original color, full interior trimming and mechanical recommissioning. It is now offered in stellar condition with comprehensive restoration file with FHVE and Centro Documetazione Alfa Romeo certificates of authenticity.
