1930 Riley Nine Brooklands Evocation Speed Special built by Allen Clear

The sporting potential of the Riley Nine became evident shortly after its launch, the development of a ?Speed Model? was undertaken with initial work by Reid Railton and Parry Thomas. A new much modified chassis was to be used, this being shorter than the standard item and dropped behind the front axle and underslung at the rear.

Numerous successes were achieved with these ?Brooklands? models, one of the most notable being the 1932 TT win.

In recent years a number of ?replicas? of the Brooklands model have been created and the car offered here, which was built by marque guru Allen Clear in 2003, is amongst the best and most authentic. Bearing chassis number 609960, this car was created from the ground up, using original, restored and newly sourced parts. The objective was to create a replica of a Riley Works Team car, suitable for road and mild competition use, with potential for further development. The basis was a new ?Speed Model? chassis, which was boxed and drilled with strengthening plates, primed and painted then fitted with a full length heavy duty under tray for additional stiffening.

The following components were used during the build: (Full specification is available on request)
Original wheels - rebuilt and shod with Dunlop B5 tyres. Kleber tubes and rim tapes.
Road springs were re-tempered and fitted with additional leaves.
Oversized Hartford shock absorbers.
Refurbished original axles, steering box and steering wheel.
New wheel bearings & seals. Shackle mounts and all brakes new.
Original brake drums, radially drilled. Handbrake crafted from rare ?Brooklands? castings.
5. 25:1 crown wheel & pinion, remote gear change, close ratio ?Brooklands? gear set.
LIght alloy long-range fuel tank (copper lines run inside chassis rails) ?Brooklands filler cap - machined from solid.
Engine:
Head and block skimmed, new studs/ nuts. Mains line bored. Standard liners. ?Brooklands alloy sump with all new baffling & pipework, lengthened studs etc.
Bronze oil pump parts. Large journal crank (Merlin type) - balanced. Omega pistons, flywheel lightened 9lbs. Newman cams. Polished con rods. 4 branch exhaust manifold 1. 1/ 8th SU carbs. Electric cooling fan. Bosch distributor. Radiator recored , Nickel surround. All new electrics etc.

The car has run 3800 miles in dry weather with only road use, apart from 3 laps of Le Mans in 2014 celebrating Riley?s 80th anniversary of their Le Mans success. The car has recently undergone a major overhaul/ service/ New Tyres with Brooklands Autocraft, which also featured an engine refresh with the fitment of a new cylinder head, with costs totalling £10, 000.

it is presented in immaculate order and is ideal for road use, hill climbs or sprints and offers excellent potential for further development should one wish.
