The Appeal
To the casual onlooker or the uninitiated, Ferrari’s new F430 could easily have been mistaken for its visually similar predecessor, the 360. But in developing its new car the firm had made a clever decision: stick close to the gorgeous Pininfarina-styled aesthetics of the 360 whilst fundamentally changing the mechanicals to create a more modern car with even better dynamics. .
The major change was the switch to the brand new F136 V8 engine from the Dino that had served Ferrari models since the 1950s. Alongside bringing the engine right up to date it also improved reliability and reduced maintenance requirements by switching the timing belt for a chain. The F430 also got a revised F1 gearbox that provided faster shifts and better clutch preservation in traffic.
This F430 Spider is beautifully presented in the rare Grigio Alloy metallic colour. It is in virtually showroom condition, thanks in part to the very low mileage but also the fastidiously careful owners. That it is also a well specified surely seals the deal on a very compelling Italian thoroughbred.
The History and Paperwork
- Originally a German registered car
- Original factory handbooks supplied with the car
- 1 key
- We are told that the car has led a damage-free life
- Most recently it was used by the owner in southern Spain
- Factory options include 19in wheels, comfort seats for extra support and aluminium sill trims and pedals
The Interior
- Subtly specified leather interior whose conditions reflects the very low mileage
- Barely any signs of wear visible, even on the driver’s seat base and bolster
- Trim and switchgear in similarly well kept condition
- Classic Ferrari design features like the yellow-backed central rev counter
- Leather trimmed dashboard
- F1 gearbox with steering wheel aluminium paddles
- Original Ferrari factory radio and sound system
- ‘Frunk’ area in good condition with Ferrari tool box and accessories bag
The understated style of this handsome F430 continues on the interior, which is tastefully and subtly specified in dark grey leather. Classic Ferrari features abound like the absence of a centre console and the closely arranged dials with the rev counter centre stage.
It is, as you might expect of such a low mileage car, in very good condition with barely any signs of wear. Even the driver’s seat base shows little sheen and the bolster is unmarked. The door cards and steering wheel tell a similar story.
It is a beautifully appointed interior too with a leather dashboard, optional ‘comfort’ seats, analogue dials, and even an original Ferrari factory sound system. In the front boot there is a factory hard plastic tool box which also contains spare fuses and a similarly branded soft accessories bag.
The Exterior
- Subtle Grigio Alloy (code 750) metallic paintwork in very well preserved condition
- 19in factory alloy wheels showing no visible marks or kerbing
- Goodyear tyres fitted
For a car more commonly painted in strident tones of red or yellow, it is intriguing to see how well the F430 shape works in a more subtle and less common shade. This car’s Grigio Alloy metallic paintwork shows off the handsome Pininfarina lines well and was clearly a wise choice by the original owner.
It is also in remarkably preserved condition. There are none of the stone chips or scuffs and marks that you might expect a 16 year old car to display, even one with such low mileage as this one. In particular, across the front, including under the vulnerable front splitter, there are no marks or scuffs. The same is true of the sides and rear valance.
Looking around this car is, of course, a real surprise and delight experience, the exposed engine with its iconic sandcast cam covers being a particular highlight.
The car sits on optional 19in factory alloys which are similarly unmarked and shod with quality Goodyear rubber showing good tread.
The underside of this car reflects the bodywork being in excellent condition with no issues to note.
The Mechanics
- 4,308cc F136 Ferrari V8 developing 485bhp
- 6spd Graziano F1 semi-automatic gearbox with F430 enhancements
- Cast iron alloy brakes
- Computer controlled LSD
The F430 marked a significant moment in Ferrari’s history. All preceding V6 and V8 based cars used the firm’s superb Dino engine, which began life in the late 1950s. Good as this motor was, by 2007 it was due a replacement and this came in the form of the F136 that has powered V8 Ferraris ever since.
This astonishing powerplant is not just as powerful and characterful as the engine it replaced, it is also considered to be much easier to live with. That is mainly thanks to swapping the timing belt for a chain, which cuts out certain particularly costly maintenance intervals.
The F430 also got a revised version of the Graziano ‘F1’ style gearbox with faster shift speeds and better clutch preservation when the car is in traffic.
Summary
The F430 may have looked similar to the preceding 360 but it ushered in a new era for Ferrari based around the superb F136 engine. Clothed in gorgeous Pininfarina bodywork it was a compelling package and it is no surprise that 14,000 were sold.
This rare Grigio Alloy car combines its subtlety with very low mileage. Just serviced by Ferrari it is a fantastic opportunity to acquire surely one of the best drop-top Italian sports cars of the last 20 years.
