The MINI hatchback (codename R50) was given an impossible task – that of replacing a global icon. Introduced in 2001, the BMW-owned but Rover Group-developed car was controversial in the eyes of purists, but a massive hit in showrooms with year-long waiting lists at launch.
As the MINI evolved, it became even more fashionable and desirable. First came the incredible Cooper S in late 2001, using an Eaton supercharger attached to the model’s 1.6-litre Tritec engine, then in 2004 along came the Convertible – or R52 in MINI-geek speak – which was offered in the same three trim levels as the hatch.
This one is one of the first Convertible models in full-fat Cooper S specification, with a peppy 170bhp and that incredible supercharged induction noise, made all the more enjoyable by its drop-top nature. With less than 61,000 miles on the clock and a service book stamped through to 58k, optional two-tone leather trim and climate control, it’s a well looked-after original example and a fantastic, fun-to-drive modern classic.

SUMMARY
The first BMW-generation MINIs were all about fun and this is about as entertaining as they get – not only is it a convertible, but it’s also the hugely entertaining Cooper S model, which never ceases to raise a smile.
Inexpensive to run, massively entertaining to drive and timelessly stylish, the BMW MINI is fast becoming a classic in its own right – a car that transcends social class in the same way the original Mini did, with cheeky looks, impressive roadholding and, in Cooper S form, amazing performance.
This low mileage example is the perfect second car for the summer - and it’s a barrel of laughs.
