1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet

Highlights

• Popular air-cooled 911 with a drop top ready for summer weather
• Very well cared for example
• Stunning specification

The Appeal

Among 911 generations, the 964 is certainly one of the most popular. It features cutting edge styling whilst retaining the best of the Porsche spirit in air-cooled form.

This particular model is an all-wheel drive, open top Carrera 4 Cabriolet and presents in a fantastic specification and condition. A dark blue soft top contrasts the silver paint work, both of which show very few flaws.

Under the skin, the engine has been extremely well cared for during its life. Regular servicing and recent work done to the engine mean this car is certain to live on for many years to come. It will therefore provide an excellent experience this summer under the sun. And with an exhaust that reportedly makes the car sound ‘like a Messerschmitt,’ your warm weather driving will feature the perfect sound track.

The Interior

• Lovely dark blue interior specification
• Very good condition overall
• Delightful 964 911 interior

Inside this 1990 example of a Porsche 911 is a very tasteful and understated specification of blue upholstery and black contrasting elements. Dark blue leather adorns the electrically adjustable seats whilst a matching colour carpet decorates the footwells in fantastic condition.

Black door cards pair nicely with the blue sea with the whole colour combination firmly placing the car’s occupants in the 1990’s. In fact from the driver’s seat, one will spot the infamous 964-generation steering wheel and recognisable instrument cluster.

The owner informs us that the stitching on the steering wheel is showing its age. But the rest of the car certainly looks to be in excellent condition inside. The seats show some creasing which reminds one of the car’s provenance. Furthermore, the factory-fitted alarm is said to be broken. However, there is an aftermarket immobiliser.

A modernised Kenwood head unit sits in the centre console and connects to the numerous speakers found throughout the cabin. All the controls on the dashboard look to be present and clean.

In the front boot, one will find the upholstery of the floor and walls in equally good a condition as the cabin. This is where the spare wheel and full toolkit also sit.

The Exterior

• Convertible 964 looks great
• Excellent all-round condition
• Dark blue and silver specification suits the car

Upon its reveal to the world, the 964’s overhauled design was far from popular among 911 purists. But today, it has become one of the favoured generations of the car by the entire motoring community. This is no doubt thanks to excellent styling that certainly doesn’t look old today.

This particular car, a Carrera 4 Cabriolet, looks exquisite in its dark silver paint with a contrasting dark blue soft top. Its haunches bulge out perfectly and the seven-spoke wheels – which look to be in fantastic condition – fit the car well. Furthermore, the owner claims that the set of Continental tyres still have good tread.

The wheels aren’t the only part of this car that look in great shape. From the bodywork to the paint and even the soft top hood, everything about this car seems clean and tidy. The owner themselves points out how excellent the paintwork looks. Furthermore, the light covers show no major signs of fogging up and all the badges appear to be present.

Underneath, the 964 introduced a flat-bottom to the 911 for reduced drag. It appears that this floor panel is still healthy and clean. Finally, the car comes with a fitted in-door 911 car cover.

The Mechanics

• 3.6-litre air-cooled flat-six engine, 250hp
• Lots of maintenance work done in recent years
• Sound like a Messerschmitt
  • Left hand drive
Any pre-millennium Porsche 911 will garner interest from purists for its engine. This car is no different. Being of the 964 generation, it features an air-cooled 3.6-litre flat-six engine which, in the owner’s words “sounds like a Messerschmitt.” They also state the car runs well and drives as it should, a testament to the life it has lived.

In fact, the car has been well cared for throughout its life. A fully stamped service booklet indicates that this 911 has received regular servicing. Whilst the folder full of invoices proves that lots of work has gone into preserving this model’s great condition be it inside, outside or mechanically.

In addition to its scheduled service and maintenance plan, this car has received a lot of work in recent years. In 2014, the engine head was rebuilt whilst in 2017 the entire engine assembly was removed with many gaskets and seals replaced.

For the 964 generation, the Porsche 911 adopted modern safety equipment such as power steering and ABS. Furthermore, being a Carrera 4, this car features a rear-bias all-wheel drive system. It does not however feature the airbags that became standard in 1991, one year after this car’s first registration. We have no reason to believe that any of these systems are not functional.

Summary

One of the more popular generations of 911, this 964 Carrera 4 Cabriolet is surely a desirable model given its fantastic visual condition and service history. It has been regularly serviced, has been through a number of engine rebuilds in recent years. As a result, it drives exactly as it should all whilst looking stunning on the road.
