The Appeal
The Mk IX is a car that comes from a real purple patch for Jaguar – the glory days of when the XK sports cars were breaking records all over the world, and it was recognised as a maker of some of the finest automobiles in the world. Grace, space and pace was Jaguar’s mantra, and the Mk IX had the lot.
It was a car that offered almost Bentley or Rolls-Royce-like levels of luxury and was built to similarly exacting standards, yet it was measurably cheaper and had more of a sporting character, not least because it used the 3.8-litre XK engine, which would go on to power the E-Type and was one of the most powerful six-cylinder units of its day.
The Mk IX has since become something of a hidden secret among classic car collectors. This is because, although it was always a fine and well-respected motor car, it never quite achieved the same cachet as its more thoroughbred rivals, despite being equally as good.
This one has been, for many years, a truly cherished example. It was purchased by its most recent owner in 1993. It remained in dry storage as part of his private collection up until 2020, when he sadly passed away.
Over the past few years, the vendor has been rehoming the gentleman’s collection of over 60 classic cars – and the Jaguar is one of them. It was last on the road in 1994 but it's been kept in dry storage ever since and is still in lovely condition.
However, the car is being sold as a non-runner and this is because it hasn't been used for some time. It will need some fettling to the carburettor and to the braking system before it can be driven, but the vendor has had the car running with a direct fuel supply from the tank, and can confirm that it starts well and sounds great.
With a few weekends tinkering, this has the potential to be a really high-quality show car and is one that deserves to be loved and cherished by its next owner, as much as it was by the one before.
