Highlights
- A superbly presented example of the fourth generation of the Range Rover
- A last of L405 line in innovative D300 diesel mild hybrid configuration
- Being a Westminster Black version, this Range Rover offers a very high specification
The Appeal
The much awaited fourth generation Range Rover was launched at the 2012 Paris Motor Show with the first production models being delivered in 2013. The L405 retained very obvious Range Rover DNA but significant changes had been made. Most notably L405 swapped its predecessor’s steel construction in favour of aluminium, high strength alloys and up to 50% recycled materials. This saw the L405 to shave an incredible 400+ kgs off its predecessor’s weight. The L405 was facelifted in 2017 to freshen the exterior design and significantly reconfigure the sumptuous interior.
This example is a 2021 vehicle and, hence, benefits from the facelift upgrades. It is the sublimely luxurious Westminster Black model and presents in pristine condition throughout. This example is the innovative mild hybrid version combining the D300 V6 diesel engine with no charging required, MHEV technology to enhance the efficiency of their engines by reusing energy collected through deceleration and regenerative braking.
The History and Paperwork
- This Range Rover is a UK supplied model first registered in April 2021
- The vehicle is a one owner example to date
- At this point this Westminster Black model would have retailed for around £90,000
- The Range Rover has covered a total of just under 13,000 miles to date
- Paperwork includes the V5 in the name of the owner
- The Range Rover underwent its first MOT in May 2024
- This notes just one minor tyre advisory
- The MOT is valid until May 2025
The Interior
- A real “special occasion” interior is provided by this sumptuous run-out Westminster model
- The upholstery presents in black semi-aniline perforated leather
- Accents of shadow walnut veneer and suedecloth headlining further enhance the luxury ambiance
“Effortlessly comfortable, superbly appointed and finished with a forensic eye for the details, every facet of the interior has been designed and engineered to deliver class-leading comfort for all occupants.” This is how Jaguar Land Rover described the interior of the L405 at its launch and it’s hard to argue with them. Over many years Range Rover has become a byword for the ultimate in comfort and luxury with practicality.
This L405 is a perfect embodiment of that ethos. Given this car’s miniscule mileage and tender age its interior presents in an “as-new” condition with all the Westminster Black refinements in evidence. These perforated Windsor leather seats, ambient interior lighting and a refrigerated front centre console.
There is four-zone automatic climate control with Land Rover’s Touch Pro Duo on a 10-inch screen. A 12.3-inch Interactive Driver Display is present to make keeping track of your mileage, off-road capabilities and infotainment simple and accessible. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard with the 19-speaker Meridian premium audio system.
The rear passengers are certainly not shorth-changed either. The rear seats electrically recline, and the rear cabin also gets its own climate control zone, and a big folding centre armrest conceals useful storage and the obligatory cup holders. The whole cabin is flooded with light courtesy of the panoramic glass sunroof
The L405 retains the Range Rover’s iconic split rear tailgate, of course. In our version this is compete with powered gesture control. In true Range Rover fashion, this is a large and usefully shaped area. Controls are on hand to remotely fold the rear seats as well as lower the suspension to aid access, if required. The under-floor area houses the spare wheel, jack and tools.
The Exterior
- Our example is finished in gleaming Fuji White (1AA) paintwork
- The condition of the paintwork and bodywork appears to be excellent throughout
- Given the Range Rover’s miniscule mileage, no imperfections were noted or reported
- The Black addition adds a range of black finished adornments to the L405’s exterior
Some minor tweaks were made to the exterior styling of the L405 at the 2017 facelift, but they were fairly subtle in truth. JLR were obviously adhering to the “if it ain’t broke” philosophy as the L405 is widely regarded as a great looking SUV which is both instantly recognisable and deeply admired.
Our example is in the very popular Fuji White paintwork. A deep shine is evident from all panels with the relative lack of brightwork lending the car a low profile and sporting demeanour. This is only underscored by Black Edition exterior features such as bonnet and tailgate lettering, grille detail and front bumper accents.
This example sits on the 22-inch Style 9001, 9 spoke Gloss Black wheels, which are also part of the Black Edition package and contrast perfectly with the white livery. These look to be in a decent overall condition but with a little kerb-rash and odd scrapes in evidence. The wheels are fitted with a matching set of Pirelli Scorpion tyres in a 275/40 configuration.
All light lenses and cabin glass appear to be in a fine, original condition. Deeply tinted privacy glass is fitted from the B-pillar back and affords rear passengers an additional level of anonymity when required.
The Mechanics
- This Range Rover is fitted with the 3.0L D300 V6 diesel engine
- This is rated at 296bhp and 650 nm of torque from just 1,500 rpm
- It benefits from Range Rover’s mild hybrid technology boosting economy and performance
- Power is fed to a permanent four-wheel drive system via an 8-speed automatic transmission
The D300 power unit in this example is well respected and favoured by many for its winning blend of power, especially torque and decent overall fuel economy. That is especially true when, as here, it is combined with Range Rover’s proprietary MHEV technology Driven appropriately, combined fuel consumption can easily exceed 30 mpg which is very good for the type of vehicle. Needless to say, that much work and attention has been lavished by JRL in making this installation extremely quiet and refined, too, appropriate to such a luxurious vehicle. 130mph and sub eight second 0-60mph performance is also on offer.
The Westminster Black is fitted with JLR’s sophisticated Terrain Response 2 system twinned with their All Terrain Progress Control (ATPC) set-up. This works in conjunction with adaptive air suspension, twin speed transfer box and electronic centre and locking rear differentials to deliver off road credentials that most tractors can’t compete with. The legendary 3,500 kg towing capacity is also retained in the L405.
Summary
This Range Rover Westminster Black is an exemplar the magic recipe introduced with the Range Rover Classic in 1970. It can provide hushed and relaxed cruising for its five occupants and their luggage whilst delivering a surprisingly rewarding and agile drive when the conditions are right. Despite all the luxury it offers a hugely practical solution to family needs, too. In this example’s apparent “nearly new” condition and with the great balance between power and economy this really could be all the car you ever need. And then some.
