The Appeal
If you’re going to trump Porsche’s 911, you better be ready for some sleepless nights because that is a tall mountain to climb. Audi’s engineers clearly endured exactly that because the result was the R8, a car equal to its Stuttgart rival.
That the R8 was based on the Lamborghini Gallardo gave those Audi apparatchiks a serious head start. But they created something quite different, a car that blended the reassuring surefootedness of its Quattro forebears with the quality of an Audi and the performance of a proper thoroughbred. All in a car that was as reliable and easy to live with as the Porsche.
So, then, the R8 makes a sound and interesting alternative to the more common 911. If you want one, then you want a car with low mileage and impeccable maintenance, just like this one. It is a 420bhp 4.2 FSI V8 Spyder that has covered less than 31,000 miles in the hands of a mere trio of keepers. It has always been serviced by Audi main dealers, with some extra work by marque specialists as required. The last service was 2,000 miles ago.
This viscerally quick supercar is ready for warmer weather. It is supplied with a large history file, advisory-free MOT, and great condition inside and out.
Dark grey metallic paintwork in very good condition for age and mileage
Few signs of use such as stone chips or marks on paintwork
Vendor tells us the car has no rust and no dents
Bodywork is very well kept with straight, damage-free panels and no accident damage reported
Underside similarly well kept with no structural advisories on current MOT
Audi factory multispoke alloy wheels in good order with grey anodised finish
Fitted with quality Pirelli tyres showing good sidewall condition and remaining tread
Black leather sports interior with silver stitching to seats, dash and doors in very good order
There is light wear to the driver’s seat bolster but not unsightly or significant
No warning lights or other electrical faults advised
Factory standard car with Audi navigation system and other premium features
Electric seats and wind break included in specification
Folding black fabric roof in good condition with no electrical faults reported
This is a very tidy example of the handsome R8, an impression accented by the smart and understated colour scheme. It has clearly been looked after with even vulnerable elements such as the large diameter wheels presenting well.
Inside, the high-quality cabin shows few, if any, signs of wear - if we look closely, there is some light creasing and sheen to the driver’s seat, but it is barely noticeable. The car is well appointed with an electric roof, navigation system, electric seats and a wind break with no reported electrical issues.
The Mechanics
4,163cc 32V all aluminium FSI V8 engine
6spd automatic gearbox with semi-automatic functionality
420bhp and 0-60mph in 4secs
AWD Quattro technology with rearward bias
Full Audi main dealer service history to 28,800 miles
No reported running or driving issues
Vendor reports that the car is now due a service
No mechanical or running gear advisories on last MOT
Two keys
Key to the R8’s appeal is its amidships engine layout and Quattro drivetrain, a surefooted, well balanced combination that enables that peach of an engine to put the power down with alacrity. And what an engine it is - engineered by Audi and assembled with the firm’s usual attention to detail and durability, it is a light, sweet-revving unit that is good for 420bhp. 60mph arrives from a standstill in less time than it takes to read this sentence.
With all that technology under its chiselled bodywork, you want the reassurance of excellent maintenance when you buy one of these cars. This one has exactly that. It has been regularly maintained by Audi to 28,800 miles - it is now on 30,800 miles - with additional minor work undertaken by specialists as required. There is a lot of history and it is available to view in the photos.
The vendor has advised that the car is now due a service based on time rather than mileage. He tells us that the car starts, runs, drives, and stops exactly as it should, with no known faults.

If an auction vehicle doesn't sell, it may be converted into a “Make an offer” listing. This will retain all of the details of the auction listing but replace the bidding functionality with an offering system whereby potential buyers can make an offer on the vehicle. To take the hassle out of the whole process and to prevent any unnecessary squabbling we'll automatically decline anything less than 70% of the asking price so only offers that are worth considering will be accepted. Make an offer listings include a “Make an offer” button. Simply click on this and enter the amount you’d like to offer and the seller will either accept, decline or counter. Easy peasy. If you don’t have a Car & Classic account with a registered bank card you’ll be prompted to set one up at this point.
If your offer is accepted, you’ll be charged a service fee. The amount depends on the cost of the vehicle and is an additional cost on top of the offer amount. Starting from as little as £/€300, it covers the cost of our various auction and escrow services, but rest assured, we're not in the woollen eyewear business and so the exact amount is always displayed upfront before you place your bid. You will only be charged if your offer is accepted.
The service fee is a charge in addition to any accepted offer amount that varies depending on the cost of the vehicle. Starting from as little as £/€300, the exact fee is clearly displayed upfront before any offer is placed so you always know exactly how much you'll be charged. It covers the cost of our various auction and escrow services and allows us to continue to provide a secure and professional platform from which to transact safely.
If you've ever squeezed a lemon then this'll be a doddle. Firstly you'll need to be logged in to your Car & Classic account and have added a valid payment card to your profile. Once these steps have been completed you can then make an offer by clicking on the "Make an offer" button on the listing page and entering your offer amount before clicking on the “Submit Offer” button underneath.
