The Appeal

Here’s one for the pub quiz – the second-generation BMW Z4 – the E89 – was the first car to have female design chiefs for both the interior and the exterior. Designed in BMW’s California studios with Italian Juliane Blasi leading the exterior design and Frenchwoman Nadia Arnaout in charge of the interior, the German-built E89 was a truly global effort.

It retained the flame-surfaced styling cues of its predecessor but was less challenging on the eye than the original Z4, with a much more rounded front end, softer side curves and a far more upmarket interior than its often spartan predecessor. It also came with a retractable folding hardtop for the first time, albeit over a decade after arch-rival Mercedes-Benz introduced such technology to the sports car market.

This example is a smart and well-equipped E89 derivative in ‘23i sDrive’ form, the second-generation Z4 being one of the fist BMWs to adapt the brand’s utterly confusing naming strategy. To break that down into layman’s terms, it’s the sportier trim level with the smallest of the two six-cylinder engines on offer - a 2.5-litre N52 unit developing 200bhp, which in this case is allied to a six-speed ZF automatic transmission.

Finished in striking Platinum Bronze, this one has loads of options, looks amazing and is the perfect future classic.
