By the time the 997 was revealed at the Paris Motor Show in 2004, Porsche purists had started to mellow to the idea of a water-cooled 911. After all, the mechanically similar 996 had been around for seven years, the engine was still in the back, and as long as the tail wagged the dog, the most important strand of 911 DNA was still alive and well.

The company also went back to basics with the styling – gone were the controversial “fried egg” headlights from the 996, replaced with smart oval lamps that harked right back to 911s of yore. It was a look much more in keeping with the classic 911 profile, even if things under the skin weren't all that different.

The 997 used much of the rolling chassis of the outgoing 996. This included an uprated version of the water-cooled Carrera engine - now offered as a 3.6-litre for the Carrera and a 3.8-litre for the Carrera S - and the same front and rear sub frame arrangements.

Performance was broadly similar but with more torque for both engine options, giving greater flexibility especially where in-gear acceleration was concerned. There was a choice of Tiptronic or manual gearboxes, too, and cabriolet, targa or convertible body styles.

Whoever specced this example new had amazing taste and, moreover, knew what made a 911 special. As such, it has the six-speed manual transmission, gorgeous 10-spoke 19-inch alloys and it’s one of the best-ever 997 colours – Dark Olive Metallic, which is so dark it almost looks black, but which has a beautiful green metal-flake finish. Oh, and it’s a 3.8-litre Carrera 4S, which means grip from all four wheels and 350bhp.

The car has just been returned to the road having been in storage for three years and has a comprehensive service history up to 2024, plus a genuine 72,000 miles from new. The vendor has thoroughly recommissioned and serviced the car and it has a brand new MOT with zero advisories.

997s like this won’t be bargains forever – you only have to look at the prices of 993 models to see how 911 prices start to soar once collectors catch on. This one is certainly fit for a collector – a genuine low-mileage example in a stunning colour, in lovely condition throughout and beautifully presented, it has everything going for it.
