The Appeal

Porsche ditching its air-cooled engines in favour of a new generation of water-cooled units upset the purists somewhat but the resulting 996 models created a new appeal to a wider market. By tweaking the formula, to ensure a more user-friendly aspect without losing the rear-engine spark and peerless quality, Porsche moved the legendary 911 into the modern era.
They continued to develop the 996 series, most notably, by installing an all-wheel drive layout to handle its increasing power output. Resulting in the Carrera 4S, further presence was subtly carried out by the turbo-look headlamps and wide arches. The mechanical aspect such as steering and suspension upgrades gave the car more edge but it was the installation of the 320bhp 3.6-litre engine that placed it amongst the 911 luminaries.
This 2004 Carrera 4S is finished in black, with a full leather interior and the desirable hardtop. It has evidence of regular maintenance over the years, with the current owner spending over 5K of maintenance and mechanical work, which includes an upgraded IMS, replacement RMS and new condensers. With its last service carried out around 1000 miles ago, it also has an MOT to July 2024.

Summary

There’s no doubting the Carrera 4S ability to serve as a driver's tool, but it was one of the first supercars to genuinely offer daily-driver appeal, with the bonus of added luxury, quality and practicality. Firmly established as a modern classic, the 996 has seen a rightful reappraisal and offers genuine thrills without too many spills. With a healthy maintenance schedule and a pleasing presentation, this well-looked-after example could just be the ticket to find out what all the fuss is about.
