The Appeal

Despite retaining the highly recognisable Porsche 911 silhouette, the advent of the 996 represented a significant technological departure from its predecessors. It was built upon the first all-new chassis since the 911 debuted in 1963 and even more significantly, was also the first 911 to be water-cooled.

The much-anticipated 'Turbo' model arrived in 2000 and featured a twin-turbocharged and intercooled 3.6-litre engine based on the 1998 Le Mans-winning 911 GT1 racer. All-wheel drive was added to help better deploy the extra power and wider bodywork was introduced to accommodate bigger wheels and improve cooling airflow.
This example is an amazing one-off car in an interesting specification. It features the five-speed Tiptronic S semi-automatic transmission and benefits from a host of exclusive Techart upgrades and refinements fitted during its first ownership. This, and its sub 12,000 miles history mark this 911 out as a once-in-a-blue-moon ownership opportunity.

The Condition

  • This example looks sublime in its bright Cobalt Blue livery
  • It benefits from a number of exclusive Techart upgrades and additions
  • The recognisable 911 cabin is predominantly trimmed in Metropole Blue leather
  • Numerous popular factory-fitted extras are present

The bright and lustrous Cobalt Blue colourway suits the nature of the 911 Turbo very well indeed adding to the drama and road presence of the car. This is enhanced still further by the range of Techart cosmetic additions added by the car’s first owner.

At the front these include the GT2-style front bumper. This features larger front intakes with carbon fibre inserts and top vent at the leading edge of the luggage compartment lid. This works in combination with the body-coloured headlamp covers to give this 996 a very purposeful and distinctive look.

At the rear a twin winged spoiler adorns the engine cover. This combines with the body-coloured roof lip spoiler and original chromed quad tail pipes to signal this car’s incredible performance potential to all who see, and hear, it.

The five-spoke Techart light alloy wheels are predominantly finished in matt black. The rims are picked out in Cobalt blue to tie them in nicely with the rest of the car. These wheels are in excellent condition and are staggered with 8.5J items at the front and 11Js at the rear. These are 19-inch items, and the open architecture of the wheels helps to showcase the yellow-finished Techart callipers and cross-drilled performance discs.

It's similarly impressive on the inside:

The front seats are the familiar high-backed sports seats with deep bolsters at thigh, waist and shoulder levels. The centre panels are finished in perforated leather and arranged into horizontal padded panels of varying widths. The built-in headrests feature large, embossed Porsche emblems. The seats are electrically adjustable and multi-stage heated. The rear seats are identically trimmed and equally pristine. They are definitely of the occasional variety but can be easily folded to provide additional luggage space.

The dashboard is finished in stitched leather and is accented with brushed aluminium panels. The signature three-gauge set consists of black-on-white instruments with inset digital readouts. The big, central tachometer is red-lined at 6,500 rpm and features the familiar “turbo” script. The instruments sit behind the original three-spoke leather steering wheel with Tiptronic change buttons on the top two spokes.

The centre console is home to the PCM screen which manages several key functions including the high line Bose audio system. Below this is the very “noughties” four CD storage unit and climate control system. The Porsche badged Tiptronic gear lever is situated between the seats with Porsche inscribed handbrake and other controls.

Carpets door cards and headlining all appear pristine as you may expect. An aftermarket set of alloy pedal covers are also fitted. The front carpets are protected by a set of heavy-duty Porsche carpet mats. In the nose is a usefully large luggage compartment. This is trimmed in dark carpet and is home to the original Porsche 4 CD changer.

The Mechanics

  • Twin-turbocharged and intercooled 3.6-litre flat-six
  • The Techart performance upgrades is believed to bring this 911’s output to 530bhp
  • This is distributed to all four wheels via the five-speed Tiptronic semi-automatic transmission
  • Given the car’s mileage and diligent maintenance, it is thought to drive faultlessly

The original 414bhp of the 996 Turbo was seemingly not deemed sufficient for the first owner who, during his ownership, specified a Techart performance upgrade. This is thought to increase the power output to around 530bhp which is thought to deliver a sub-4-second 0-60 mph time and a top speed in excess of 190mph.

The permanent four-wheel drive system of the 996 Turbo helps to get all that power down in the vast range of driving conditions. This car is fitted with the optional five-speed Tiptronic semi-automatic transmission. This can be left to its own devices if required or the driver can manually select gears via the wheel-mounted buttons.

In traditional terms the mileage of this car would suggest that it may be ready for its first service. In reality the car has been diligently maintained based on time elapsed rather than miles covered which is exactly as it should be. It is no surprise, then, that the car is reported to be in a first-class mechanical condition.

Both engine bay and underside presentation help to underscore this status and seem commensurate with the car’s age and mileage.
