The Appeal
Ferrari’s original 1960s front engined, V12-powered cars stunned observers. Achingly beautiful and devilishly quick they established a GT lineage that continues to this day.
The Pininfarina-designed 456 cleverly updated the original profile of these cars and the M ‘Modificata’ version added a modified interior and carbon fibre bonnet. Expensive and rarified, few 456Ms were built, just 650 GTAs like this car leaving the factory over five years.
Subtly finished in Grigio Titanio and in very good condition, this low mileage GTA has full service history and presents very well. Cosseting yet very, very quick, this is the Ferrari you can relax and enjoy and bring family and friends along for the ride.

- Full service history with 6 stamps, most recently on 21st January 2018 at 47,679kms

- Vendor states that the car will be sold with 12 months warranty
The Interior
- Black leather dashboard in great, unmarked condition
- Four seater with stylish seats in good condition, only very light sheen of wear visible on driver’s seat bolster
- Only the lightest signs of use around the car, such as on one of the driver’s seat electric switches and the ashtray
- Electric seats with memory function
- Aluminium interior trim and sport pedals
- Factory alarm system
- Alpine aftermarket stereo
The refined interior of this GTA is a strong indicator that while the firm’s sports cars are all about intensity, in this four seater V12 GT the emphasis is firmly on comfort and relaxation. With its blend of hand-crafted leather and Ferrari dials it is a distinctive and rewarding place to sit. There are electric seats and a quality Alpine sound system to ensure everything is just as the driver and passengers want it.
The interior of this car is finished in subdued black, with leather trim on the dashboard and centre console as well as the four stylish seats. As a low mileage car it is naturally in very good condition, just some very light signs of wear on minor switchgear to note, but nothing immediately visible.
The Exterior
- Attractive Grigio Titanio (code 3238) metallic grey paintwork in good condition
- Only some light stone chips on the bonnet to be aware of
- Pirelli tyres and factory supplied 17inch alloy wheels look very presentable
- Later ‘M’ with carbon fibre bonnet and aluminium bodywork
- Black brake calipers
- The last Ferrari fitted with characterful pop up headlights
- Tubular steel space frame chassis cleverly bonded to aluminium bodywork
Away from the traditional red of Ferrari’s sports cars, Grigio Titanio seems a fitting finish for this most understated of performance cars. The paintwork on this car is very smart and presentable, just a handful of stone chips on the front bonnet to note.
The bodywork is lightweight aluminium bonded to a steel tubular chassis and with a technologically advanced carbon fibre ‘clamshell’ bonnet. This was, regrettably, the last Ferrari to be fitted with classic pop-up headlights.
The Pirelli tyres are mated to factory 17inch alloys which are in generally good condition, just some light kerbing on the driver’s side front rim to be aware of.
The car comes with a fresh ITV test from January 2023 that can be viewed in full in the photographs.
The Mechanics
- 5.5litre Ferrari F116C V12 engine developing 430bhp
- F116C engine considered to be a particularly reliable unit and unstressed in the 456M
- 0-60mph in 5.5secs
- 4spd automatic gearbox with electronically controlled shifting for precise gear changes
- Full service history with six stamps and most recently 4,000kms ago
- Supplied with 12 months vendor warranty
Ferrari’s GT cars have traditionally been powered by the firm’s superb ‘Colombo’ V12, but the 456 was the first to receive the all-new F116 motor. At 5.5litres and developing 430bhp it is known for its smoothness and reliability and in the 456 is relatively unstressed.
GTA cars got a 4spd automatic gearbox with electronically controlled shifting that was claimed to provide precise changes timed with engine revs. It is an option that leans into the 456M’s relaxed yet capable image. But these were rare and expensive cars and only 650 automatic-equipped 456Ms left the factory between 1998 and 2003 when production ended.
This car has a fully stamped service book indicating work by Ferrari dealers and independent specialists. The most recent service was at 47,679kms, around 4,000kms ago, in 2018. The car will be sold with a 12 months warranty.
Summary
Understated and handsome, the 456M did exactly what buyers of these rare and expensive GT cars wanted: provide subtle, relaxing and very quick conveyance from A to B. With or without friends and family.
This low mileage GTA is nicely presented and in good condition. It has the reassurance of full service history and a 12 months vendor warranty. Smooth, surefooted and quick, it is surely one of the nicest GT cars of the last 20 years.
