The Appeal

The successor to the Virage, the new Vanquish was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 2001. Designed by Ian Callum it has tremendous presence, and proved to be an immediate sales success. Its James Bond association just added to the attraction. The 6.0 litre, V12 produced engine pushed out 450bhp through an Auto-Shift Manual electro-hydraulic 6 speed gearbox.  This ASM gearbox allowed for proper manual paddle operated gear changes, or relaxed full automatic mode, with Sports settings on both.

The last of the Newport Pagnell built Astons, and amongst the final hand built cars, the first series Vanquish will always be regarded as one of the most desirable V12 Aston Martins. This exceptionally low mileage example has lead a cosseted life, with many thousands spent on servicing, and only light use by 4 owners.  With invoices on file for nine Main Dealer services it has, on average, been serviced about every 1000 miles!  The last service (15,000 mile Full Service by Aston Martin Works) was just 326 miles ago in August 2022.  Recent work includes replacement of a faulty ECU and fuel pump, carried out by Bamford Rose at a cost of £10,375 in December 2022. Now running and driving as it should the Seller is offering the Vanquish as he has too many cars and a lack of storage space.

The Interior

  • Pacific Blue leather interior with Blue carpet and Smoke Alcantara headlining
  • Heated perforated leather electrically adjustable seats in immaculate condition
  • Optional Satellite Navigation and Premium Audio systems
The soft seats have just enough creasing to give an attractive texture to the blue Connolly leather.  There is no visible damage, even to the Driver’s side bolster that usually shows wear.  This Vanquish was ordered in 2+2 configuration so it has the small rear seats that appear to have never been used.

These could be deleted which was a no cost option, but quite unusual as it robs the Vanquish of the ability to seat four.  There are clean blue carpets that show a few foot scuffs, mainly below the pedals; nothing a good valet couldn’t sort.  The switchgear is all clean and the instruments appear to function correctly with no warning lights showing. The Smoke grey Alcantara roof lining is clean and stain free with no damage or sagging. The Vanquish had plenty of options ticked from new including heated seats and screen, mobile telephone connectivity, Sat Nav and the Premium Audio system.

All the leather surfaces, such as the dash top and door cards are in good condition, although we did note that a small area of leather has lifted from its backing on the passenger door; not very noticeable.  Other than that the interior is in overall excellent condition as you might expect in a hand built car of such low mileage. Looking in the boot we find nothing out of place. The black carpet is clean and looks untouched and the optional fire extinguisher is in place.  The optional Aston Martin umbrella is still mounted under the boot lid along with the warning triangle.

The Exterior

  • Skye Silver paintwork in excellent condition
  • Correct 19 inch alloy wheels with lightly worn Michelin Pilot Sport tyres
  • All glass areas and light lenses in good shape
We studied the Skye Silver paint closely, and only upon close inspection could we find any blemishes, and these are minor.  There are a few small stone chips on the nose, and a small 1” scratch that has been touched in. The rest of the bodywork is immaculate.  The wheels are superb, clean with no curb marks or lacquer damage. Tyres are matching Michelin Pilot Sport, all lightly worn.  The glass areas, including the large and vulnerable low mounted driving lamps, are chip and crack free.

Overall the exterior is superb, not completely faultless but pretty close!

The Mechanics

  • Hand built 6 litre 48 valve V12 with 460bhp and 400lb/ft of torque
  • Auto-Shift Manual 6 speed gearbox
  • Main Dealer Services every 1000 miles from new
The Vanquish started with a mighty growl as we reversed it out of its heated garage.  Starting easily from cold it eventually settled down to a deep bass burble, and was easy to manoeuvre round during the photo shoot. It has been thoroughly spoilt by all its owners with no expense spared and services every 1,000 miles.  Having developed a misfire on one cylinder bank it was fitted with a new ECU and fuel pump in December 2022 at an eye-watering cost of £10,375.  The last maintenance carried out, a full 15,000 mile service, was carried out by Aston Martin Works in Newport Pagnell and the Vanquish has been driven just 326 miles since so it’s safe to say it’s in fine fettle.

A V12 GT Aston is never going to be a cheap car to run, but this example has the history, maintenance and expenditure to ensure it is in exceptionally good health!

Summary

Described when new as “the ultimate grand tourer” the Vanquish has lost none of that ability over the years.  The perfect Aston for blasting across the Continent it still has massive presence, and an excess of performance to back up its muscular looks.  There are few around as well preserved and cosseted as this one, so if you looking for one of the best examples available, then here it is!
