The first all-new Spider since the ‘60s original was freighted with the heavy weight of expectation. It delivered. From its clamshell bonnet to its classic ‘coda tronca’ truncated tail, the new car looked good. Detail fettling by Alfa Romeo’s engineers - plus a potent range of engines - meant it went well to.
It was one of the final outings for Alfa Romeo’s 3litre V6 ‘Busso’ engine. Later Phase 2 cars like this one got improved interiors, more powerful 24V versions of that engine and 6spd gearboxes.
This Pininfarina-built Spider is a very low mileage example with documented history. Finished in smart metallic blue with black Momo ‘Lusso’ interior, it is enthusiast owned and has been looked after. Recent work includes a service, new tyres, general check over and the a/c regassed. It is pleasingly factory standard except for the addition of polished 17in alloys.
The V6 version of the 916 Spider is a rare sight on these shores. With the roof down and that motorised soundtrack, for red blooded petrolheads there can surely be few better places to be this summer.
