The coupé market underwent something of a resurgence in the late 1980s, following the launch of models such as the Vauxhall Calibra and Toyota Celica.
Volkswagen’s contribution was the Corrado, its replacement for the aged Scirocco, which was assembled for VW by coachbuilder Karmann in Osnabrück alongside the Golf ‘Clipper’ cabriolet.
It stood out from the crowd as a series of angles amid a sea of curves, and while others laid claim to class leading aerodynamics and slippery fuel efficiency, the Corrado was all about sturdiness and solidity. It may have been a coupé, but you could instantly see in its styling a lot of Jetta and Golf.
It was a classy package, its neatest feature being an integrated boot spoiler that sat flush with the bodywork, but which would raise automatically at speeds of over 50mph. Clever stuff.
The most sought-after of the lot is the Corrado VR6 – the result of yet another reengineering exercise to accommodate VW’s new V6 engine from the Mk 3 Golf VR6 under the low-slung bonnet. The 171bhp 2.9-litre unit was just what the Corrado needed to truly shine while some fairly significant chassis tweaks at the same time brought a whole new level of fun to the model.
This is one of them – a 1996 example from late in the production run, with full leather trim and a set of smart Schmidt Modern Line gold alloys. It’s a smart light custom example, and an ideal entry into the VW scene.
