The Appeal

The YJ Jeep of 1986 was the firm’s first full revamp of the iconic post-war CJ with the focus on making it more driveable on road without sacrificing its capabilities offroad.  It quickly gained a reputation for being both rugged and reliable.

This 1995 YJ 4litre is one of the last built and looks stylish and purposeful in its Emerald Green metallic paintwork.  It is a low mileage, low owner example with a thick history file.  It has recently been recommissioned and has a long MOT to March 2024.  There is room for cosmetic improvement but these YJ’s were built to be workhorses and this one looks presentable and generally structurally sound.

The History And Paperwork

  • First road registered on 31st March 1995
  • VIN confirms this as a 4litre 1995 model built at Jeep’s Toledo, Ohio factory
  • MOT to March 2024 with advisories for windscreen, seatbelt, brake pipes, anti roll bar linkage and body corrosion
  • Thick history file with stamped service book to 2014
  • Complete set of Jeep handbooks and manuals
  • One set of keys

The Interior

  • Light cream leather high back seats in good condition
  • Carpets in very good condition throughout
  • Rear seats with seatbelts fitted
  • Dashboard and dials in good condition
  • Beige vinyl side screens and tonneau included
  • Aftermarket radio fitted
The interior of this nearly 30 year old Jeep seems to confirm the low mileage and suggests that while it is a highly capable workhorse it has likely led a more sedate and relaxed life.
This impression is provided by the light cream leather seats which are in remarkable condition – particularly given the practical nature of this Jeep – and so is the grey plastic dashboard with its smattering of auxiliary dials.  All look in very good, smart condition.  The same is true of the carpets.  Only the carpeting on the seatbacks betrays any marks.
There are rear seatbelts fitted and it's sold with rear seats that are grubby, so there is scope either detail these or to source and fit a set of Jeep rear seats for this YJ.

The hardtop is removable and there is a factory fitted rear roll cage.  This is encased by foam vinyl trim.  This trim is showing signs of mould that the buyer may wish to address before it gets worse.
The doors on the YJ are removable and there is set of beige side doors and screen and a matching tonneau.  They appear to be in good condition.  Although the Perspex has discoloured it does not appear to be cracked. There is a small area of repair on one of the seams on the tonneau.

The Exterior

  • Attractive Emerald Green metallic paintwork
  • Chrome nudge bars front and rear and side steps
  • Auxiliary driving lights
  • Removable hard top in good condition
  • Nexen tyres on the back and Infinity on the front, all with good tread
  • Underside appears to have been wax oiled
The YJ cleverly broadened the appeal of the earlier CJ, particularly by making it better to drive on the road, but it did not stray far from the earlier  car’s aesthetics.  Some of the panels and fittings are even interchangeable.

This Jeep looks good in its Emerald Green metallic, a very popular colour for cars in the mid 1990s.  The purposeful chrome nudge bars front and rear and the extra driving lights add to the sense that this is a highly capable offroader.

The bodywork is presentable from a distance but there are noticeable areas of corrosion around the vehicle.  The nearside front wing has a sizeable hold on the top alongside an area of corrosion and there is also deterioration around the front nearside indicator.

On the same side there is corrosion below the passenger door, some of which appears to have been poorly touched in.  Below the door there is a scuff.  There is also an area of corrosion above the rear nearside wheel arch where the body meets the mudguard.  There is also corrosion on the nearside rear corner.

On the back of the Jeep there is rust below the rear door and below the door hinge.  The inside of the rear door itself also shows surface corrosion.

Moving to the offside the paintwork has deteriorated on the rear corner and there is also corrosion below the door and on the top of the front wing.  On this side there are some chips on the sill below the door and on the bottom edge of the hard top.
The paintwork on the plinths supporting both wing mirrors has faded.

On the front of the YJ there are various stone chips.

The attractive Jeep wheels are in good condition, just light kerbing affecting the nearside front one.  The tyres are Nexen on the back and Infinity on the front and appear to have good tread.

The chrome nudge bars front and rear and side steps appear to be in good condition.

The latest MOT from March 2023 shows advisories for the windscreen, a seatbelt and the hole in the wing.  We were unable to identify the issue with the windscreen or seatbelt from the photographs.  There is also an advisory for the structure but again we were unable to identify this from the photographs.
Bearing in mind the MOT commentary, the underside appears solid and recently wax oiled.

The Mechanics

  • 4litre straight six AMC242 Jeep engine developing 190bhp
  • 5spd manual with high/low 4WD transfer box
  • Separate body design with live axles front and rear
  • Extensive history file with invoices and MOTs back to 1990s
  • MOT to March 2023 with advisories for brake pipes and anti-roll bar linkage
The 4litre straight six petrol engine at the heart of this Jeep is one of the firm’s finest achievements, a highly durable and reliable engine that is simple to maintain and good for high mileages.  This example has a five speed manual gearbox with high/low 4WD transfer box.

The rugged YJ used simple running gear, with live axles front and rear suspended from its separate chassis.

This Jeep comes with a thick history file that confirms the low mileage and suggests careful owners.  The stamped service book has regular stamps up to 2014 and MOTs run back to the 1990s.  It appears to have been off the road between 2021 and early 2023 when it was recommissioned by the Vendor and a fresh MOT added.

We were unable to verify the recent service history so this may be something for the buyer to check with the Vendor.

The latest MOT contains advisories for anti roll-bar linkages and two brake pipes.

Summary

The YJ Jeep is a highly capable, go-anywhere alternative to Britain’s popular Land Rover.  Mechanically durable and structurally simple, it is distinctive and easy to own.

This low mileage, low owner YJ is one of the last built and has just been recommissioned and equipped with a long MOT.  It looks presentable and the interior suggests it has enjoyed a relatively cosseted life.  There is scope to improve the cosmetics and some minor MOT advisories to be aware of, but as a drive-away, off road or on road workhorse, it looks enticing.
