The Appeal

From the late 1980s, BMW enthusiasts seeking to dial things up to 11 - beyond standard factory trim - had a new solution: AC Schnitzer.
Having made its name on the track, Schnitzer turned to road cars. Its cars mixed some choice cosmetic modifications with some serious mechanical enhancements. Amongst the first to benefit was BMW’s E34, which became the S5 3.7 after a detailed run through the Schnitzer works.
Schnitzer took stock 535is off the line, bored out the engines to 3.7litres and upgraded the suspension. The result was one of the fastest E34s available with handling to match. The process was extremely expensive and, consequently, these cars are exceptionally rare. So rare, in fact, that many enthusiasts don’t even know they exist.
Here is one and it definitely exists. It left the BMW line in May 1990 as a 535i before emerging a month later from the Schnitzer works after a S5 conversion. It is a very rare manual car in highly original trim, right down to the Schnitzer rims. A thick history file reveals a complete service history back to day one and a useful AC Schnitzer origin certificate. Recently recommissioned after careful dry storage, this is a great example of a truly scintillating super saloon.
