The Appeal
By the time production drew to a close in July 1989, Mercedes-Benz had perfected the R107 SL formula.
Having introduced the superior M103 engine in 1985 and galvanised the body shells from the following year onwards, these late 300 SLs are widely regarded as the best of the bunch. Collectors covet the very last examples - especially those with a “G” prefix registration, denoting they were first registered in August 1989.
We’re delighted to present this superb UK market example - one of the last R107 SLs ever built.
It’s covered a mere 57,605 miles and is accompanied by a supremely well-documented service history, with the original maintenance schedule and a wealth of supporting invoices. Having undergone restoration a few years ago, the current owner has since attended to a few finishing touches, including alloy wheel refurbishment, a new genuine windscreen and several important mechanical jobs which ensure this SL is ready to be enjoyed. The MOT has recently been renewed, running until 29th August 2025 and free from advisories.
If you’re a Mercedes-Benz collector, we needn't remind you what an excellent opportunity this super-late SL represents!

It’s no secret that we see a fair few R107 SLs at Car & Classic which means we know how to spot a good one. This 1989 car is a splendid example in every detail and as the photos show, it’s beautifully presented inside and out.
The bodywork looks arrow-straight, with tight panel gaps and well-fitting doors which open and close with the reassuring weight and quality of a bank vault. We can’t see any signs of corrosion or accident damage and the paint holds an even shine across all panels. The hood too presents superbly, with no notable wear to the fabric or any cloudiness to the windows. The car also comes with its factory hard top - a rarity as many were lost or even discarded in period. The chrome trim continues to gleam and we can’t see any obvious pitting. Having had the wheels recently refurbished, all four alloys look stunning, shod in their matching new set of tyres.
Inside, the upholstery is only lightly worn in line with the very low mileage. The walnut trim looks utterly superb, as does the dash top and carpets throughout. This SL has the desirable rear seat option too, along with a period-correct Pioneer DIN stereo. The switches and controls all remain in good condition and the vendor reports that everything functions as it should.
The capacious boot is clean and tidy, with its full-sized spare wheel under the floor as well as the original Mercedes first aid kit, still in its cellophane wrapper. The vendor has added a bespoke luggage set - perfect for those nights away.
The Mechanics
3.0-litre M103 straight-six
Four-speed automatic gearbox
No MOT advisories
Impeccable engine compartment
Cold start valve replaced
All flexible fuel pipes replaced
You’ll no doubt want to use this car as its makers intended - for long-distance grand touring. And you can thanks to the meticulous maintenance this example has long enjoyed. The vendor assures us that it is very much “on the button” and the recent advisory-free MOT pass confirms that this car is ready to enjoy right away.
With so few miles under its belt, this SL has accrued very little in the way of mechanical wear, and the regular servicing has clearly paid dividends. We’d have no hesitation in driving this car right across the Continent tomorrow.
