1986 Mercedes-Benz R107 300SL

Highlights

  • One of the best we have seen
  • Very low documented mileage
  • Collector quality, factory standard car
  • Desirable galvanised chassis model
  • Few miles since last service work
  • MOT to September 2024 with no advisories

The Appeal

The popularity of the R107 means buyers are spoilt for choice. To be good a car really needs to stand out. This one certainly does.
It is one of the best we have seen in recent months. Finished in rare Light Ivory with Brazil cloth interior, it is a very low mileage car - less than 60,000 miles from new - in quite remarkable condition. The service history verifies the mileage and it comes to market with an advisory-free MOT. An added advantage is that it is one of the first of the desirable galvanised chassis cars.
With its factory correct specification, right down to the Blaupunkt Bremen radio cassette - and high level of presentation, this is a collector quality R107 ready for its next enthusiastic keeper.

History and Paperwork

  • Purchased new in Germany in 1986
  • VIN records show the car was built in February 1986 and delivered in April
  • An early example of the desirable galvanised chassis cars
  • Reportedly in the same family to 2018
  • Only six registered keepers
  • Very sparingly used by recent keeper as verified by service and MOT records
  • Stamped service book to 57,968 miles in January 2021
  • MOT to 8th September 2024 with 58,001 miles showing on test and no advisories
  • Now showing 58,719 miles
  • Original set of owner’s manuals in good condition
  • Good history file of invoices dating back through time and including old tax discs
  • Some Mercedes main dealer history recorded in the service book
  • In addition, we’re told that the oil has been changed annually
  • V5C present in current keeper’s name

The Condition

  • Factory correct condition with rare Light Ivory paintwork (623O) in great order
  • Paintwork and bodywork very well kept and believed to be original and unrestored
  • Retains its factory matching hard top with stand and Dark Brown (8023) fabric roof
  • Both are very well kept to the same standard as the rest of the car
  • Sits on factory Gullideckel alloy wheels in very good condition
  • Brazil brown fabric checked interior in good condition showing barely any wear
  • Smart walnut wood veneers across dashboard and centre console in well kept condition
  • Period correct Blaupunkt Bremen radio cassette which appears to be original
  • High specification including cruise control and electric windows
  • Everything reported to be in full working order
  • Underside in good order with no structural advisories on current MOT
  • Factory fitted with optional rear seat
While the SL is quite capable of being an everyday car, this example looks to have been saved for high days and holidays. The interior, resplendent in its period brown colour scheme, shows very little sign of usage and, as such, looks to be something of a time warp.

The owner reports that the car has been kept in a garage for most of its life and, given the lack of UV damage that is apparent, we can well believe it. Some of the credit must also go to Mercedes for the level of build quality that they achieved with the R107, to which the condition of the interior furnishings bears testament.
In the boot, there is a spare tyre and the full original factory toolkit, both of which appear to be completely unused. Overall, you will struggle to find better. Presented in a shade of cream known as ‘Light Ivory’, this car is a real stunner in any of its configurations: top down, soft top up or hard top installed. Aside from one small mark on the back panel (pictured), the paintwork is in excellent condition and is complemented by beautiful chrome work.

The wheel trims are unmarked and there is a matching set of Michelin tyres which all look to have good tread. Underneath, the vendor tells us that the car was treated to a rust protection process and it certainly seems to have paid dividends as the underside is remarkably clean.

Overall, it’s a real credit to its current and former keepers.

The Mechanics

  • 2,962cc straight six fuel injected engine
  • 4spd automatic gearbox
  • Vendor states that it starts and runs beautifully
  • Factory fitted with ABS
  • Regularly maintained by main dealers and specialists to 57,968 miles
  • Has covered less than 1,000 miles since this work
  • No reported running or driving issues
  • No mechanical or running gear advisories on current MOT
  • Thick history file showing regular maintenance over car’s life
You’ll be pleased to hear that the originality and great condition continues here. Reportedly completely unmodified, the car starts without hesitation and runs very smoothly.
The MOT history shows only minor advisories and, if the level of care that this car has clearly received is maintained, then we expect that trend to continue.
