The Appeal
Delivering just one ground-breaking saloon would be enough for some car makers. Not so Citroen. When the CX arrived it was just as revolutionary as the DS, mixing a la mode fastback styling with a raft of clever details that set it apart from its conventional rivals. And that’s all before we mention that clever hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension with its magic carpet ride.
A sporting version of Citroen’s relaxing saloon doesn’t seem an obvious idea. But in the French firm’s hand, it worked. The GTI, launched in 1977, added more power to make the CX an effortless long-distance GT.
Survivors are very rare, which makes this late model Series 1 a real treat. Finished in dark grey metallic, one of the best colours for these beautiful cars, it retains the many factory details that make these pre-facelift cars sought after. We particularly love the chrome bumpers and original oval-themed digital dashboard.
The car retains its factory features and is in very good condition indeed. The vendor imported it from the Netherlands last year and confirms the displayed 73,000 kms (45,437 miles) is genuine. The paperwork goes back to 1985 and includes invoices for a raft of recent work. The vendor has clearly invested in bringing all of this car up to the same standard. That includes a full seat and armrest retrim in genuine Citroen grey cloth by Chevronics and a small number of minor mechanical parts. He has even converted the a/c to modern gas.
Underlining the impression that creates, supported by the photos, is a long MOT to August 2025. That could be the car’s last if the buyer chooses - this car is eligible for Historic Vehicle status from 1st April so will be tax, MOT and ULEZ exempt.
The vendor tells us:
It delivers classic CX comfort with brisk acceleration and excellent braking. It is a joy to drive. The CX was Car of the year 1974 for good reason. Our family loved the CX estates in 1980s.”
