The Appeal

Introduced at the 1980 Geneva Auto Salon, and named in homage to the marque’s previous Formula 1 success and its global prominence, the Mondial was a bold replacement for the 308/208 GT4. It featured new Pininfarina bodywork, an intelligent space frame chassis, the trusted Dino V8, and a comfy, spacious cabin solidifying a superb grand touring experience.

This particular Mondial 8 represents the first iteration of the model, marking the birth of a very successful, and iconic Ferrari. As such, it remains incredibly desirable across the globe, for its significance, ownership experience and increasing rarity. Offered with superb mechanical health, an excellent overall condition and superb history, this really is a collector’s delight, and will no doubt instil tremendous pride within the lucky new keeper.

The History and Paperwork

  • Assembled in Modena, Italy
  • First registered on the 2nd of July, 1981
  • Believed to retain plenty of original components
  • Boasts a low mileage figure, and a low owner count
  • Failed MOT on emissions in July 2024
  • Vendor has assured that 12 months MOT will be provided for sale
  • Includes a very thorough collection of history & paperwork

Thanks to a fantastic document collection, this 1981 Ferrari Mondial 8 boasts excellent history, detailing the vehicle’s life. First ordered by Maranello Concessionaires Limited in September 1980, this Mondial would enjoy its early days in the United Kingdom, before residing in Denmark for a number of years, and then returning to the United Kingdom. Since its re-arrival to the country, the vehicle has been cherished as part of high-end collections and now boasts an impressive 37,858 displayed miles, and a rather low former owner count.

Although this example reportedly boasts excellent reliability records, the vehicle retains a large folder of history, with plenty of previous maintenance to show. In addition to invoices, the history folder also includes the current V5C document, original order documents, and forms from its travels in Europe.

The Condition

  • Offered with a desirable specification
  • Showcases red paintwork, with a tan leather interior
  • Features recently refurbished Mondial alloy wheels
  • Boasts no known previous restoration work
  • Presented in excellent overall condition for its age

Originally offered with Nero paintwork, this Mondial now sports a very iconic combination of red paintwork, 5-spoke Mondial alloys, and a gorgeous Tan interior. For those looking for a true 80’s Ferrari experience with a very desirable specification, this presents a fantastic opportunity.

In addition to its fantastic spec, this Mondial also reflects a great deal of care over the years, as exemplified by the overall condition. Although lower sections of the paintwork suffer from light signs of age, there’s still plenty of shine to be enjoyed and tidy black trim components to complement.

The interior follows suit, offering comfortable and tidy tan leather upholstery, with clean carpeting, a rather well-preserved headlining, and fully operational switchgear. It also deserves to be noted that the vast majority of the vehicle is believed to be original, making the interior condition in particular, very impressive.

Overall, you’d be hard-pressed to fault the vehicle’s condition for its age. Light signs of wear and the expected age-related blemishes hardly detract from a rather well-cared-for finish.

The Mechanics

  • Powered by a 2.9L V8, paired with a five-speed manual gearbox
  • Runs and performs very well, with no known faults
  • Benefits from plenty of previous maintenance
  • Previously fitted with a new clutch, and pressure plate
  • New clutch master cylinder fitted recently
  • Ready to be driven, and enjoyed

To power the Mondial 8, Ferrari once again put their trust in the lightweight Dino V8, mounting the 2.9L engine behind the driver in true Ferrari tradition. Paired with a five-speed manual gearbox, the V8 offers a thoroughly enjoyable drive, with a subtle soundtrack to enjoy across the rev range.

In keeping with the low mileage figure displayed and with plenty of previous maintenance under its belt, this particular Mondial 8 performs absolutely brilliantly. The engine fires up right away, and the vehicle is said to run and drive exactly as it should, with no known issues.

Summary

Presented today is a fantastic opportunity to obtain a brilliant example of one of Ferrari’s most iconic creations; the Mondial 8. This low mileage example sports a very desirable specification, and reflects tremendous care over the years, offering quite an impressive finish throughout. Presented with excellent mechanical health, and vast history, this would make a superb addition to your collection.
