The Appeal
Citroën caused a sensation with the CX and its space-age design when it debuted in 1974, with its streamlined aerodynamics and unusual styling. In a way, it was a repetition of history, almost two decades after the appearance of the equally spectacular DS, which also made a strong impression at the time.
The transverse-engined, front-wheel-drive CX was a masterpiece, but it was also the subject of some criticism, not least from the French dignitaries sitting in the back. They complained that the tapering roofline meant compromises in terms of rear headroom, resulting in the CX Prestige at the top end of the range. Rather than disrupt the revolutionary aerodynamics by raising the car's roofline, Citroën instead increased the wheelbase so as not to lose the aerodynamic benefits of the sculpted hatchback. Interestingly, the first owner of this very car was a friend of President Giscard d'Estaing, who himself had a CX Prestige - infact, the reason the Prestige exists at all can be attributed to his complaints about the headroom in the standard CX!
This example is a pre-restyling 1977 car with the 118bhp 2.4-litre in-line four-cylinder engine - a DS heritage renowned for its durability. Originally registered in France, it spent a few years in Belgium and is now being offered for sale by a Swiss collector.
This is a beautiful original with an incredible interior and is presented in excellent condition inside and out.
