The Appeal

Introduced in 1974, the Honda XL125 was a crucial part of Honda's 'off-road' model range - a series of off-road bikes, test bikes and race bikes that had a real cult following in their day.

The 'L' in XL stood for 'Legal', which meant that it was a fully road legal bike unlike the more extreme XR models, which were designed solely for off-road use.

The XL 125 was the latest addition to Honda's off-road range, using a 124cc two-stroke engine producing 13bhp, but thanks to the bike's lightweight construction it was still capable of a top speed of 110kph if you were brave enough.

The single-cylinder, single-camshaft engine is absolute simplicity - one of Honda's most durable powertrains with maintenance-free electronic ignition, close-ratio six-speed transmission, aluminium skid plate and chain final drive.

This is a first-generation example dating from 1976 and has been in the hands of its owner for a long time. Kept as a collector's machine, it has covered just 3,406 km since new and although it has not been used on the road for a long time, it is complete, roadworthy and well preserved with just a slight patina to underline its completely original condition.
