The Appeal

One of the sleekest, most stylish Chryslers in history - and yet incredibly scarce - the new Cordoba was a personal luxury coupe that emphasised opulence and a smooth, quiet ride - with an unusual Hispanic design cue. The 'gold coin Chrysler' offered a real exoticism to the American market, and - at a time when Chrysler seemed to be in constant cashflow problems - became one of their biggest-ever hits. Corinthian leather, sleek deco lines and a de-chromed approach all contributed to the car's magnificent profile.

Of course, the fact it had Ricardo Montalban as a spokesperson only continued the theme. It perfectly hit the zeitgeist. Half of Chrysler division production during this period (and occasionally more) was composed of Cordobas, and they helped to revive the division. All Cordobas were built in Windsor, Ontario.

This impressive 1976 example was with the same keeper - a very experienced engineer - for over 40 years. Over that period, he committed to some modifications that have kept the car's distinct character perfectly intact. Over those 40 years, this has included the removal of the vinyl roof, plating in the opera windows, a custom two-tone paint job, and the installation of a high-quality air suspension. The result is a car that's ascended beyond its '70s origins.
