1971 Land Rover Series IIA 88'

Highlights

  • Purchased from renowned Land Rover specialist John Brown 4x4 Ltd
  • Garaged and used only in dry weather

  • Fitted with a new carburettor, new starter motor, electronic ignition and new rear road springs

The Appeal

To comply with new safety regulations in several export markets abroad and generally improve the forward lighting situation, Land Rover changed its trademark inboard headlamp arrangement for late Series IIA models. The headlamps moved to the front wings, where they would remain during subsequent Series III, Ninety, One Ten and Defender production. This change necessitated a new radiator grille design, which became known as the 'Maltese Cross' in reference to its shape.

This 1971 example is one of the last Series IIAs and so sports outboard headlamps and one of these 'Maltese Cross' grilles. The vendor acquired it though the reputable John Brown 4x4 Ltd, this Land Rover has since been well cared for, garaged, and used only in dry weather.

Presented in largely original and supremely usable condition, it would be a fantastic choice for those looking to continue their classic motoring into the colder months of the year, It comes with a canvas tilt and desirable truck cab-type roof, so the next owner can tailor the vehicle to their tastes, requirements or indeed the weather conditions. Subject to copious recent work and reportedly driving well, this Series IIA has a lot going for it.

  • Exempt from road tax and MOT
  • Purchased approximately two years ago from John Brown 4x4 Ltd in Yorkshire

  • The tyres reportedly have plenty of wear left
  • The chassis appears sound, with no notable corrosion visible in the photographs
  • The corrosion-prone rear crossmember looks in good shape and is fitted with a tow bar
  • Bodywork and underside appear in smart condition for the vehicle's type and age
  • Classically finished in Bronze Green to a decent standard
  • The 'Birmabright' alloy bodywork is suitably patinated with various dents but largely straight and tidy, as the photographs show
  • The galvanised cappings all present well overall
  • The vendor suggests repairing the hole in the driver's footwell (photographed) and perform remedial work on the upper bulkhead
  • Interior is original to the model with no notable changes; standard-type seats in good condition with no holes according to the vendor
  • Smaller steering wheel fitted, allowing for more driver legroom; steering wheel in the photographs is the one it will be sold with
  • Previous owner fitted bench type rear seats
  • The vendor notes that the speedometer has recently stopped working, although the other instruments and cabin electrics appear in good order

The Mechanics

  • 2.25-litre four-cylinder petrol engine
  • Manual transmission with four gears plus low-range and four-wheel drive
  • Free-wheeling front hubs fitted
  • New carburettor, electronic ignition, new starter motor fitted
  • New rear road springs fitted
  • Reportedly equipped with an earlier Series II gearbox, so no synchromesh on lower ratios
  • The vendor notes that the Land Rover runs very well for its age and type
  • Water temperature reads high - not uncommon for Land Rovers of this vintage, and the vendor doesn't note any overheating issues
  • All presents well under the bonnet
