The Appeal

The Chevrolet Chevelle made its debut in the 1964 model year, strategically positioned between the compact Chevy II and Chevrolet’s full-size offerings like the Impala. Entering the market just as the muscle car era began to take shape, the Chevelle quickly captured attention. By mid-1964, the top-tier Super Sport (SS) model was available with GM’s 327 cubic inch (5.4-litre) V8 engine.

As the Chevelle evolved through several redesigns, it gained acclaim and, by the 1970s, had become known as “America’s most popular mid-size car.” For the 1970 model year, the Chevelle SS could be equipped with an optional 454 cubic inch (7.4-litre) high-performance V8. This engine, with a formidable 365 bhp (gross) and a net bhp of around 285, solidified the Chevelle SS as one of the most powerful and fastest muscle cars of its time.

The 1971 example comes to the market after a body and interior restoration was completed in 2021. It has been enjoyed by the vendor since then, following his five-year ownership, but it is now time for someone else to enjoy this classic American muscle car.

History and Paperwork

  • Imported from the USA to Sweden in 2018
  • Owned by the vendor since 2019
  • Restoration carried out between 2019 and 2021
  • Fully inspected and approved for use in Sweden

The Condition

  • The entire body is said to have been rust-treated
  • Finished in the original colour of Mulsanne Blue
  • Panel gaps and shut lines are matching
  • Chrome work has been fully replated
  • Fully retrimmed interior to original specification
  • New carpets throughout

When examining the Chevelle, it’s easy to see how well everything fits and aligns as it should; the paintwork and panel fit is excellent. During the restoration, the original bumpers were said to be in good condition, so these have been re-plated, retaining their original quality. The headlights and sidelights are in good condition with no damage to the lenses. The grille is in good order with the famous ‘SS’ and Chevelle badges in place.

From the side, you can appreciate the enormity of the Chevelle, with its wonderful flowing lines uninterrupted by any dings or dents. The windows, trim, and seals appear to be in good condition.

At the rear, the large chrome light panel has a bright finish, and the lights are free from splits or cracks in the lenses. The five-spoke wheels look in good condition, and the tyres have a good amount of tread remaining.

Inside, the car takes you back to the 70s with a fully retrimmed interior to original specifications, which is in good order.

There is a small crack in the dashboard just above the instruments, but other than that, the dash presents well. The instruments and switchgear are said to be working correctly, and the odometer shows a reading of 17,500 miles, but the vendor believes this will probably be 117,500 miles. A set of additional auxiliary gauges has been installed on the lower section of the dashboard.

The steering wheel is original and has some patina, in keeping with the Chevelle's age.

New carpets and headlining have been fitted throughout, both of which are in good order.

The Mechanics

  • 7.4-litre
  • Upgraded Edelbrock inlet manifold
  • Long tube headers
  • Holley carburettor
  • Runs superbly

The 7.4-litre engine fires up without hesitation and sounds excellent. No issues have been reported with the car's running or driving. The three-speed automatic gearbox has a smooth change, and the vendor has reported no faults.

Some choice upgrades have improved the sound and performance of the Chevelle. These include a Holley carburettor, an Edelbrock inlet manifold that enhances cold air intake, and a set of long tube headers with a Flowmaster muffler that manages the exhaust gases and contributes to the fantastic sound.
