Fitted with a full roll cage, perfect base for a Red Pig replica
All original interior removed parts are included in the sale – excluding the seats and carpets
The Appeal
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL is an iconic luxury car, but it most certainly isn’t a one-trick pony. In 1970, the AMG division’s original founders created a Touring Car racing variant of the opulent limousine dubbed the Red Pig. This, Mercedes’ first foray into Motorsport after the deadly Le Mans crash of 1955, rapidly gained the name Red Pig due to its size in comparison to its opponents. Despite its obvious disadvantage, the model often seen as the first AMG model managed to win its class at the 1971 Spa 24 Hours finishing the race second overall.
Since then, the car has remained in the Mercedes Hall of Fame inspiring many to replicate it using existing 300 SEL models. That was indeed the fate of this 1970 example which was imported to the UK from America by its current owner. With too many projects on their plate, the car is being moved into new hands.
Fitted with a full roll cage, the car is ready to be turned into a full-on racer though all the original parts are included in the sale. As such, this is also an excellent base for a full-scale restoration project.

Summary
Despite looking sorry for itself having been stripped since entering UK soil, this 1970 Mercedes 300 SEL provides the perfect starting point for a large-scale restoration. Be it towards a racing replica of the iconic Red Pig or back to its glory days of road worthiness, the car has great potential as all the original parts are still with the car.
