The Appeal

Maserati is a name steeped in motorsport history, so it’s rather fitting that it named its Tipo 116 Grand Tourer after two legendary victories at the Indy 500. Technically and visually similar to the Ghibli, yet featuring monocoque construction for greater rigidity and improved aerodynamics, the Indy proved the more capable chassis - with four seats to boot! That posed an issue for Maserati, as they had intended to pitch the Indy as a less expensive alternative to the Ghibli. The solution they arrived at was to limit the engine capacity to 4.2 litres for the first years of production when it was forced to play second fiddle to the Ghibli. We’re delighted to offer one of these intriguing early examples,
This 1970 Maserati Indy is an Italian market, five-speed manual example. It’s had a lot of money spent on it during recent years, arriving in Germany in 2014 and since owned by a succession of two car collectors. It presents very nicely throughout and is said to drive well. While the vendor identifies a few small foibles the next owner may wish to attend to, the car is in good health and ready for its next custodian.

The History and Paperwork

  • Italian market car, imported to Germany in 2014
  • Retains its Italian documents
  • The vendor offers the car on behalf of a private client
  • First registered in February 1970 and delivered to its first keeper in Milan
  • Owned by one collector after another since arriving in Germany
  • Confirmed matching numbers by a Maserati delivery certificate
  • Numerous invoices showing that more than €12,000 invested in recent years
  • The odometer displays 1,118 km and has revolved so the true figure is 101,118 km
  • Last technical inspection in 2021 resulting in a clean pass (100,965 km)
  • The car will be delivered with 1 set of keys and a folder with invoices and documents, including the Maserati certificate of delivery and origin

The Condition

  • Repainted in red from its original Oro Longchamps (gold metallic)
  • The bodywork appears very sound with no obvious signs of corrosion
  • The doors seem to fit well and the swage lines remain clearly defined
  • The full leather interior is in fine condition and the vendor believes that the seats and door panels have been reupholstered during recent years to a high standard
  • The Borrani Dial alloy wheels are reportedly original to the car and in very good condition
  • The lever for the wipers has come loose and needs to be repaired or replaced
Designed by Vignale, the Indy has great road presence, especially this one in red - the most Italian of colours. It presents beautifully throughout, with straight bodywork, smart paint, gleaming chrome and barely any notable wear to the interior. The underside is similarly smart with no apparent corrosion, while we understand the cabin electrics are in good working order.

The Mechanics

  • 4,136 cc carburetted V8
  • Five-speed ZF manual gearbox
  • Factory power steering
  • The tyres are Michelin XWX from 2019, which still have almost their full tread remaining
  • The engine compression was tested. It was even on all cylinders (>9 bar)
  • The engine reportedly starts and runs well with strong, smooth acceleration through all gears
Recent work includes:
  • The water pump was replaced and the water and oil circuits were checked in readiness for sale
  • New clutch and clutch hydraulics
  • New front tie rods in 2019
  • New headlights in 2019
  • Tank ventilation renewed in 2021
  • New brake hoses in 2021
  • Valve cover gasket in 2021
  • Front axle wishbone bushings were replaced in 2021
  • Brake fluid and oils replaced (2021)
The vendor notes the following small issues
  • The heating valve can not fully be turned off with the corresponding lever
  • One of the levers for ventilation regulation does not move at present
  • The steering wheel needs to be adjusted
  • One front wheel drags inside the wheel arch at full steering angle (only in one direction it seems)
  • Adjustment needed for the maximum steering angle
The vendor demonstrates that this Indy starts readily and sounds fantastic, and a compression check further suggests that the engine is in very good order. As the above list of work shows, a great deal of time and money have been lavished upon this Maserati during recent years. Correspondingly, all presents beautifully under the bonnet.
