The Appeal
Developed in just three months thanks to the singular vision of one man, Chief Engineer Kevin Beattie, the fastback Jensen Interceptor was a revelation when it was unveiled at the 1966 London Motor Show.
Following its rush into production it was arguably the Mk II from 1969 that brought the improvements that the car needed. Alongside some suspension and exterior changes these cars got an entirely new ‘impact resistant’ interior to suit Federal regulations.
Just 1,128 Mk IIs were built, of which only 633 were RHD ‘123 Series’ cars destined for the UK. For many years the earlier and later cars tended to overshadow these mid-period cars. Now afficionados are returning to the MK II because it blends the best of the other cars, in particular the luxury trim and sweeter-revving smaller capacity 6.3litre engine.
Recently imported from a dry South African state, this original UK market RHD car is in superb condition, smartly finished in contrasting white and black accented by Compomotive ‘knock off’ alloys. There is a lengthy history file dating back to the car’s early days. This is a fantastic example of one of Britain’s greatest GT cars.

Boot floor in good order with no issues to report
The Mk II Interceptor mildly updated the front and rear aesthetics but it was inside where the real change occurred. These cars got a much more modern dashboard designed to suit new Federal legislation, where the majority of Interceptors were sold.
This car left the factory painted Cerise over tan but now sports a smart contrasting white over black colour scheme that certainly suits the car’s evocative and iconic lines. The restoration work has clearly been undertaken to a high standard, the bodywork being unmarked and the glass and panel fit being particularly good. Inside the story is much the same, the Mk II’s very desirable luxury interior, with its revised and more comfortable seats, being well kept and factory correct.
The Mechanics
6,276cc Chrysler V8 running on carburettors developing around 240bhp
Fitted with a Chrysler 4spd Torqueflite A-727 automatic gearbox
Rear wheel drive
Recent attention to the electricals by specialist Classic Chrome
The Interceptor was a clever idea. Dropping a very modern Touring-designed body onto the chassis of the C-V8 transformed a rather ungainly GT into a svelte and iconic future classic. The running gear is proven C-V8, which means early cars were fitted with Chrysler’s torquey 383CI 6.3litre V8 engine and silky smooth Torqueflite automatic. Thanks to detuning to accommodate tighter emissions regulations and requirements for two star fuel, these engines ran at about 240bhp from the factory.
Enthusiasts rate this engine as being more responsive and delivering much the same power as the later 7.2. This is part of the reason why interest in the Mk II, which is the rarest of the Interceptors, is increasing.
This car presents in very good mechanical order, with no reports of issues from the vendor. Since arriving in the UK it has received attention to the electricals and the history file indicates prior ongoing work to keep it in good condition.
