The Appeal

We’re delighted to present an unmissable opportunity for BMW enthusiasts.
This 1970 BMW 2000 SA is a real rarity, and you’d be forgiven for never having seen one before. Originally designed by Piedmontese Carrozzeria Frua for Bavarian automaker Hans Glas GmbH, this intriguing four-door saloon borrowed styling cues from BMW, including the famous ‘Hofmeister Kink’. Glas was taken over by BMW in 1966 and this car would live on in South Africa with BMW underpinnings and badging.
Here we have one such right-hand drive example from 1970, which the vendor understands to be the only example in the UK. Following a nine-month discourse with the DVLA, the tenacious vendor was finally able to assign the car an age-related UK registration. They have also liaised with BMW South Africa who have been able to confirm this has the correct 1,990 cc engine fitted - making this rare car rarer still!

It’s highly original and in very fine condition throughout, while also benefitting from road tax and MOT exemption.

The History and Paperwork

  • V5C present
  • No former UK registered keepers
  • Originally delivered in complete knockdown form to South Africa where it remained until 2016
  • Imported to Malaysia with incorrect engine capacity listed - (believed to reduce import tax) - and imported to UK in 2021
  • Acquired by the vendor as a freshly imported, unregistered car
  • Various invoices and old registration plates accompany the car
  • 29,641 miles indicated on the five-figure odometer
  • Exempt from road tax and MOT testing
  • BMW has authenticated the car and it's believed to be the only one in Britain

The Condition

  • Original and well-preserved throughout
  • Resprayed at some point to a good standard
  • The vendor notes some light bubbling on the rear nearside door, but otherwise, there are very few imperfections
  • The chromework presents well indeed but there is some pitting on the B pillars
  • Straight and solid-looking bodywork with great panel fit
  • Some surface corrosion visible underneath, although we’re not informed of any issues
  • The OEM steel wheels and trims are in good order
  • Original vinyl upholstery with few signs of wear
  • The controls, instruments and switches present well
  • All electrics work other than the fuel gauge
  • A crack in the dashboard has been infilled to reduce its appearance
  • No boot stay fitted at present
  • Complete with a spare wheel

The Mechanics

  • 1,990 cc four-cylinder BMW petrol engine
  • Three-speed automatic gearbox
  • All presents well under the bonnet
  • The vendor reports that the gear selector is a little misaligned although reportedly works correctly
  • We’re informed that the BMW drives well, with no apparent issues and happily sits at 60 mph
  • New 'doughnut' to draft shaft
  • Light service and full inspection carried out during current ownership revealed no issues
