The Appeal

Making its debut at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show, the Jaguar E-Type was an icon from the very start. Combining achingly gorgeous looks with dynamic performance, the new Jaguar immediately blew away any competition and took its rightful place as one of the world’s most desirable cars.
Beneath its beautiful Malcolm Sayer-designed body, the E-Type was a technical tour de force. Constructed from an advanced monocoque shell with subframes supporting the drivetrain and suspension components, the E-Type was both light and strong. All round independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes served to put the E-Type even further ahead of its contemporaries, with the whole package ultimately making for an unrivalled driving experience.
Offered here for auction is a truly special Series 2 E-Type in the gorgeous colour combination of Regency Red with beige interior & hood. Featuring Jaguar’s renowned 4.2-litre straight six engine married to an all-synchromesh 4-speed manual box, this splendid ‘open two seater’ E-Type really is something to behold.
Benefiting from a high-quality restoration maintaining its originality, this elegant Series 2 E-Type OTS now offers its next custodian the opportunity to enjoy '60s GT motoring at its very finest.

The History and Paperwork

The Condition

  • Sensational Regency Red exterior contrasting beautifully against external chrome details and fabulous original wire wheels
  • Perfectly proportioned roadster body style emphasising the E-Type’s phenomenal curves
  • Benefiting from improved Series 2 exterior lighting and wrap around rear bumper
  • Lovely interior colour combination of beige leather over matching carpets
  • Fabulous original wood-rimmed steering wheel featuring iconic chequered flag central boss
  • Attractive Smiths speedometer and tachometer flanked by a row of auxiliary gauges in wonderful lightly patinated condition
On first approaching this E-Type it’s clear that its restoration work has been undertaken to a high standard. Finished in its original shade of Regency Red, the deep rich paint work contrasts beautifully against the car’s ample chrome adornments and tan trim.

The paintwork is generally in an excellent condition throughout, save there is a small area of slight micro blistering on the boot lid. Hardly noticeable as the paint surface is not broken. There is also a finger nail size touch-up of a paint chip on one edge of the boot lid. The body is free of any significant damage or corrosion.  Furthermore, the shut lines of this E-Type appear straight and uniform with the car as a whole sitting very nicely on the road.

The tan soft top hood is in good condition and without any evidence of damage to the fabric or fittings. There is a very small slit in the rear screen. Sitting well on the car whilst in its raised position, it is only with the roof lowered that one can fully appreciate the beautiful profile of the open top E-Type.

On opening the beautifully contoured driver’s door and taking a seat behind the large iconic wood rimmed wheel, you are immediately transported back to an earlier more glamorous time, one where style and design could have free reign.

Trimmed in a beige perforated leather with matching carpets, the interior of this E-Type is a very special place to be. Presented in a very smart condition with only the mildest of patina, it’s great to see the original charm of this interior has been preserved during its restoration.

Additionally, being a Series 2 car, this example also benefits from much more comfortable seating for driver and passenger, featuring a reclining function, headrests, and seatbelts.

One of the very best features of the E-Type’s interior though has to undoubtedly be that iconic view down its long and shapely bonnet to the horizon and adventures that lay ahead.

The Mechanics

  • Glorious 4.2-litre straight six engine giving ample smooth and torquey performance
  • 4-speed manual gearbox with synchromesh on all gears
  • Extensive recent renewals including starter motor, radiator, fans & water pump, alternator, engine mountings, radius arms (receipts for all such work, provided)
  • To note that the post-delivery-fitted air conditioning system has been removed.
Carefully lifting the E-Type’s large clamshell bonnet, one is treated to a sight of pure 1960s engineering excellence, presented here in a restored condition.

Featuring Jaguar’s glorious 4.2-litre straight-six engine, the Series 2 E-type benefits from the extra tractability offered by its larger capacity over its earlier 3.8-litre iteration. The E-Type still feels quick and powerful even by today’s standards and delivers its power in a smooth and refined manner.

Throughout the current, 10 year ownership, the owner has noted a slight whine of the gearbox main bearings when in neutral.  This has not changed over the owner’s 5,000 miles of use, including a 400-mile trip to Holland a few weeks ago. The owner also notes that the Speedometer can be slow to return to zero  - this usually corrects on longer runs when the car is warm.
