The Appeal
Lest we forget that Lancia was one of the great automotive innovators during the mid-twentieth century. Not contempt to sit back and relax following the enormous success of the ground-breaking Aurelia, Lancia's engineers began work on an even better car to replace it.
The Flaminia was unveiled in 1957 and was to be yet another technological tour de force. The Aurelia's V6, transaxle and De Dion tube remained, but engine capacity was raised from 2.5 to 2.8-litres and the front suspension significantly upgraded to a double-wishbone coil spring setup with an anti-roll bar.
Lancia offered a range of body styles, including a beautiful coupé, bodied in aluminium over a lightweight ‘Superleggera’ frame by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan. And that's exactly what we have here. We're informed that this 1968 example was once owned by former Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt. It's remarkably original, remaining in superbly preserved unrestored condition with a charming patina. Mechanically, all is said to be in superb order following a recent engine overhaul. You'll note this car is the ‘3C’, which stands for “carburatore” or “three carburettors”; that means there's a very respectable 150 horsepower on-tap.
If you're looking for a svelte '60s GT with character in abundance, you simply must consider this 1968 Lancia.
Original grey metallic paintwork with a patina reflecting its age
Dark red leather interior with grey carpet in superb condition for its age
Spot of corrosion on the lower front edge of the passenger door
Presents well for its age with no major defects reported
The vendor assures us that this Lancia is original inside and out - quite remarkable for any car of this age, let alone one so special. As a result, the it exhibits a gorgeous time-earned patina making this one of the most usable original examples you're ever likely to encounter.
The bodywork presents impeccably considering its age, with just one spot of corrosion on the lower front edge of the passenger door reported by the vendor. The paint and chrome finishes present well with light wear commensurate with age, while the glass, lights and badging present very well indeed.
On the inside, all looks immensely smart, with moderate wear to what we're informed is the original red upholstery. The controls, instruments and switchgear all present very well and we're not informed of any known electrical defects.
Engine has reportedly run only about 100 kilometres since the overhaul in 2015
If you've driven an Aurelia, you'd be forgiven for thinking it was the best Lancia could do. The Flaminia proves that they could do even better, offering improved front suspension, greater performance and superb handling to boot.
We're assured that this example is in very good mechanical order and drives brilliantly following an overhaul in 2015.
