The Appeal

Hailing from a period when Ferrari was at the top of its game, the 365 GT was built to take on the likes of the Aston Martin DB6, Jensen Interceptor and Lamborghini Espada - cars that were designed with the sole purpose of traversing Continental Europe at breakneck speeds and in supreme comfort.
In the face of strong opposition, Marinello held all the aces - namely the glorious ‘Colombo’ V12 in 4.4-litre form and svelte styling courtesy of Pininfarina. The most popular 365 GT was the 2+2 model, which unlike the popular 330 GT 2+2 it replaced, featured self-levelling independent rear suspension. At almost five meters long, it was the longest Ferrari to date, earning it the nickname ‘Queen Mary’ - which also referenced the immensely luxurious cabin.
We’re delighted to bring to market this Italian-supplied matching numbers example from 1968. The vendor informs us that the previous keeper owned the car for around 25 years, only making the hard decision to sell their beloved Ferrari as they had become too old to drive it. In 2023, it underwent a routine engine service and also received a new Ansa exhaust system along with several other miscellaneous jobs.
European spec 356 GTs are always of immense interest to Ferrari collectors, so here’s your chance to acquire a lovely example.

While Pininfarina has worked with many manufacturers during its long and illustrious history, the Turinese firm’s long-standing relationship with Ferrari is perhaps its most special. Pininfarina’s work on the 356 GT disguises the car’s length thanks to the low roof line and soft, elegant curves. There’s plenty of glass area and the extended roof line allows for ample rear passenger room. Unlike other so-called 2+2s, this is a proper four-seater. This example presents very well without being overly pristine to enjoy as Ferrari originally intended
The cabin is a lovely place to be and this one looks smart with an attractive age-commensurate patina to the upholstery and controls. Those gorgeous instruments read clearly and the switchgear looks to be in good order. The period Blaupunkt radio is a particularly nice touch.

The Mechanics

  • 4.4-litre ‘Colombo’ V12 with down-draft carburettors
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • Well-presented engine compartment
  • Basic engine service carried out in 2023
  • New Ansa exhaust recently fitted
Besides the looks and the luxury, what really sets the 356 GT apart is what lies under the bonnet. The ‘Colombo’ engine is without doubt among the best V12s ever made and in 4.4-litre guise, this example is said to produce around 315 horsepower. It no doubt sounds fabulous through that nearly-new, period-correct Ansa exhaust system and all presents nicely inside the engine compartment. We’re advised that the last routine service was completed in 2023.
