The Appeal

Produced between 1961 and 1968 the Series 1 remains the most sought-after E-Type  amongst enthusiasts thanks to the purity of its design This 1966 2+2 Coupé - by far the most versatile of the early E-Types - was originally exported stateside before being repatriated to the UK in the early '90s. It was subsequently converted to right-hand-drive and fully restored. The project was completed in 2000, and the car has been enjoyed sparingly ever since.

The sweeping lines and performance of the Jaguar E-Type shook the motoring world when they were first launched all those years ago, and they’re still captivating collectors and motoring enthusiasts the world over being one of the most iconic and beautiful cars ever made. This beautifully restored and nicely presented 2+2 Coupé is guaranteed to turn heads and create a stir every time you drive it, with the benefit of the more powerful 4.2 engine, all-synchromesh gearbox and that rare Webasto sunroof.

The fully documented photographic history detailing the extent and stages of the restoration together with its extensive history file have unfortunately been lost over the years, but the quality and full extent of the work is fairly evident from the excellent overall condition of the car.

Once fully restored and registered in the UK the car has sat in an air cocoon, with another 5 E-Types to keep it company, being started and given short runs regularly.

The car looks great and drives beautifully though it could probably do with a good long run to blow away a few cobwebs.

The Condition

  • Excellent Opalescent Regency Red paintwork
  • Excellent wire wheels all with good Dunlop Sport radial tyres
  • Halogen headlights
  • Great overall condition
  • Re-trimmed Red leather interior
  • Factory-fitted Webasto sunroof
  • Carpets and door cards all good with a few scuffs on the door cards which will probably polish out
  • All the instruments and switches work as they should
  • Internal chrome trim shows a nice aged patina
  • Headlining all good and Webasto roof works nicely and correctly
  • Lovely wooden E-type steering wheel
  • Centre armrest/cubby box
  • Equipped with hazard lights
  • Driver’s door is known to occasionally lock itself when shut
  • Solid floors with rubbers on the loading rails becoming a bit tired
  • Upgraded stereo fitted
  • Spare wire wheel and tools
Repainted many years ago in the striking Opalescent Regency Red, the car still looks exceptional from all angles, the paint having a good, deep shine to it with only a few small scratches and touched-in chips to spoil a perfect picture.

All the body panels and doors are straight with good panel gaps all-round, though the passenger door may benefit from some small adjustment to make it close more flush with the body. The external chrome is showing its age in places as are a few of the window rubber seals and there is a small area of bubbling paint round the offside rear window.

Undersealed early on, the sills and chassis rails are all really nice and under the huge louvered bonnet the engine bay is nice and clean with no signs of any issues.

The car looks great from all angles and sits squarely and purposefully on the tarmac on its gleaming Daytona wires wheels and Dunlop Sport tyres, the faired in headlights and 2+2 coupe body accentuating the E-Types muscular lines.

Fully retrimmed in Red leather and Red carpets the cabin of the E-Type is also in great condition with just a small amount of patina in places, which are appropriate for a car of this age.

Carpets, door cards and internal chrome handles are all still very nice and the wonderful Jaguar centre dash and dashboard have no cracks or any other damage, although the surrounds to all the smiths gauges have some very early signs of corrosion, but all the dials work and are still nice and clear.

The floor pan and the boot floor are all nice and solid and other than the rubber load strips beginning to perish there is very little that will need any attention inside the cabin.

The Mechanics

  • 4.2 litre XK straight-six
  • Full synchromesh four-speed gearbox
  • Full engine rebuild carried out during the restoration including the conversion for unleaded fuel
  • Gearbox rebuilt
  • All new suspension arms and shock absorbers
  • Coopercraft brakes with copper brake pipes
  • Stainless header tank
  • Electric fan
  • Stainless exhaust system
  • Handbrake mechanism greased and serviced
  • New engine oil and sump gasket
  • New gearbox oil
  • Carburettors stripped down and rebuilt
  • New oil and seals in rear differential
All the running gear, engine and gearbox received full strip downs and rebuilds during the restoration with many new parts and components being fitted to ensure that all the mechanics of the car work perfectly.
With very little use since its restoration over twenty years ago, and having had its last oil and filter change over a year ago, the car now needs a good long run to stretch its legs, but for the moment, the engine starts easily and runs very nicely.
