The Appeal
If one car embodies 1960s Americana, it’s the Mustang. Upon introduction, the Mustang offered a plethora of options spread across three body styles, smart styling and a very affordable asking price - however through the years that affordable asking price has become but a faint memory for most.
This lovely example presented to us here remains in stunning condition, an extensive restoration was undertaken approximately 20 years prior with a previous owner, stripping the car back to the bare shell and ensuring no nut or bolt went untouched. Images of the restoration process are with the vehicle and show the extent of the work carried out, and the end result is entirely worthwhile. Even two decades later, it remains in beautiful condition thanks to careful custodianship.

The Interior
Handsome interior restoration
Upholstery presented in excellent condition
Brightwork wonderfully maintained
Carpets and headlining in lovely shape
The interior of any pony car remains a lovely place to be, surrounded by refined upholstery with brightwork scattered around the cabin. Arguably one of the most iconic and recognisable interiors of its time.
Opening the door, we’re presented with a handsomely kept pair of front seats which appear to have little to no signs of use. Even though the restoration was undertaken many years ago, careful ownership has ensured that it remains excellent to this day! All of the stitching across the seats is entirely intact, and the cushions remain a comfortable place to sit. Straight ahead when sitting in the driver seat, the deep-dish three-spoke steering wheel is well presented with dazzling brightwork in the centre. Just behind, the gauge cluster appears to be entirely functional, showing a mileage of only 2,954 miles which is assumed to be since the restoration was completed.
The dashboard appears in very nice shape, with no cracks or damage present throughout with lovely switchgear and an original radio in the centre console. The transmission tunnel is nicely finished too, housing the automatic gear selector with lovely brightwork.
Rear seats remain much the same as the front, in excellent condition with virtually no signs of age or use, with functional rear window rollers remaining present. Carpets front and rear remain plush and free of wear, with the Mustang logo front and centre.
Headlining is in excellent shape too, with good sun visors and no sagging to be seen anywhere. This is one handsomely kept Mustang, a proper time machine that would fool you into thinking you’re back in the 60’s.
The Exterior
Lovely Rangoon red paintwork
Styled Steel wheel shod in BF Goodrich Radials
Excellent brightwork
Straight and true bodywork with great shut lines
When you think of 1960’s muscle, the outline of a mustang more than likely pops into your head, maybe driving along an open road at sunset or stopped in at an iconic diner. Well, this is exactly that kind of mustang that you end up picturing. Finished in Rangoon Red and sat on 'Styled Steel' wheels with Radial T/A’s, you don’t get much more Mustang than this.
At the front of the pony car, the headlamps are in excellent condition, no signs of fading or damage can be seen here. The lower bumper paintwork appears to be kept in terrific condition, with some stunning brightwork across the entire front end, even the iconic Mustang logo front and centre remains an absolute pleasure to look at. The car also wears some metal pressed Florida plates, a nod to where it would be across the pond.
Around the side of the vehicle, everything remains to be excellent. The bodywork and paintwork remain very nicely maintained, with factory fitting panel gaps and some lovely paint cognition. Original 289 badges are present on the front wings as well as some Mustang logos behind the front wheels. The wheels themselves, ‘Styled Steel’ presented in stunning condition with no blemishes immediately noticed wrapped in BF Goodrich Radial T/A which appear to have date codes from 2014, however show no signs of cracking or degradation. Brightwork surrounding the windows shows great clarity with no pitting or blemishing.
At the rear of the Mustang, the story very much continues with stunning brightwork dazzling in the light, excellent paintwork condition and lovely bodywork with good panel gaps. Really, there isn’t any holes to pick at here - this is an extremely well cared for example, and it shows as soon as you lay your eyes on it!
The Mechanics
Original 289ci V8 petrol engine
Automatic transmission
Great mechanical condition
Recently waxoyl’d
Power steering
Front brake disc conversion
Fitted with a 289ci (4.7 litres for us that use the metric system) V8, it provides the Mustang with a plentiful bark. This engine replaced the earlier 260 engine used in full-sized Fords in 1963, providing a strong base with a two-barrel carburetor and rated at 195bhp.
This example is reportedly in excellent mechanical condition thanks to careful ownership, ensuring that any issues are quickly rectified and servicing is kept on top of. The engine is stated to start up at the turn of a key and produce a healthy grunt under some throttle application as you would expect of some old american muscle!
Mated to an automatic transmission, the owner tells us that the gear changes remain smooth and uninterrupted by jerks or unwelcome noises. Recently the owner had to rectify a problem with the handbrake to get it properly operational, and at the same time had the vehicle waxoyl’d to ensure preservation of the excellent chassis condition.
In 2018, the Mustang was welcomed to a brake upgrade with a Kelsey Heyes 4-piston front caliper upgrade with discs, making for a much more confidence inspiring driving experience. The steering has also been upgraded to power steering, making for more direct and easier to handle driving on more demanding roads.
Not only does this Mustang deliver when it comes to dashing looks, but it also seems to be very well maintained and ready to hit the road for some head-turning cruising.
Summary
This Ford Mustang is quite easily among one of the best, considering the age of the restoration, the car shows a remarkable amount of care and attention over the years gone by. This would make an absolutely fantastic addition to anyone's collection, a true piece of American muscle with absolutely killer looks!
