The Appeal

Following the success of the unashamedly unconventional Type 1 and Type 2, Volkswagen decided to add a car with more traditional proportions to their range, logically christening it the ‘Type 3’. While it never enjoyed quite the level of success, the Type 3 was highly regarded and remains a sought-after classic amongst today’s thriving air-cooled community.
This 1964 ‘Squareback’ has been meticulously restored and serviced by the vendor’s classic car restoration business, making it a standout example. The unique Glasurit yellow colour with a metallic green roof adds to its charm and ensures it won't go unnoticed on the road. With only one previous owner and a full restoration, this car is a fantastic opportunity for any classic car enthusiast.

History and Paperwork

  • Just one previous owner from new
  • The car was conserved and garaged in 2000 and wasn't driven again until 2020

  • Purchased for restoration by the current owner, who runs a small restoration company
  • Regularly serviced in current ownership
  • We’re informed that the original 1964 bill of sale accompanies the car
  • The original colour was white, but the car was painted in 1988 in Glasurit yellow with a metallic green roof
  • 30,821 kilometres indicated, although we’re unable to verify the true figure

The Condition

  • Restored to a very good standard by the vendor’s workshop
  • The bodywork remains in very good condition with no notable damage, dents or corrosion

  • Pop-out rear windows are still in good working order
  • The vendor advises that the clock may need a repair as it sometimes loses power
  • The windows are working well as the mechanisms have been serviced

The Mechanics

  • 1500 cc air-cooled ‘pancake’ engine, mounted beneath the boot floor
  • Four-speed manual gearbox
  • Mechanically, the car is unmodified
  • The engine has been serviced by the vendor and the carburettor repaired
  • New exhaust, spark plugs, timing belt, battery, gaskets, brakes, and clutch
  • The original 6V installation is still in place, but the battery may need replacement due to low capacity
  • Reportedly driving very well indeed and the vendor states tat it has proved reliable and comfortable on long journeys
